Many couples booking a spring wedding will be hopeful for good weather. A time associated with sunshine, blooming flowers, and blue skies. But alas, we do live in Great Britain after all. My spring wedding was as grey as it gets with rain to go with it, while my sister’s spring wedding was a heatwave – she didn’t think those fur boleros through for the bridesmaids I tell you! It goes to show, you really can’t predict the weather, but you can plan for it. When scouring the region for your big-day venue, yes you may have dreams for an al fresco wedding, guests sitting outside, a green grass aisle as you walk to your betrothed, but Wedding Planning 101 advises to always have a contingency plan. A question for any potential venue you set your heart on. This issue, we showcase some stellar venues in Lancashire and those with outdoor settings, and we also have lots more Q&As from our experts over in Hot Topic and Fashion and Beauty Q&A. Nordic NUPTIALS Ashleigh and David-John’s Viking-themed wedding had an emerald green colour scheme Images courtesy of Emma Beaumont Ashleigh and David-John met in modern fashion on a dating app. “I had always said I would only marry a Viking!” says Ashleigh. “When I added David on social media, he was Viking-strong and bearded, and I was in shock! David said he loved my curly hair and my bottom! Our first date was a hike in Llangollen and we just enjoyed each other’s company and it went from there.” The story then went to Aberdeen (where David-John is from) for Ashleigh’s birthday in April 2023, on the way to their accommodation, DavidJohn said he had to stop to see something, Dunnottar Castle. “It was beautiful with the sea and the views,” says Ashleigh. “Upon looking around I said I’d love a picture with the castle in the background. He asked a lady to take a picture, and she was clearing people out the way which I thought was funny. Then David-John got down on one knee and proposed and I cried. It was such a beautiful start to our trip and the best birthday present.” The big date was set 20th September 2024 with Stables Country Club setting the scene. Here, Ashleigh tells us more about their day… REAL WEDDINGS 27
The venue catered for us, we opted for canapés then a buffet meal which were amazing, so many people went back for seconds. Our wedding cake was made to look like a log with our initials and a Viking stencil on top with our wedding date on. The table plan was a rustic multi-frame design. Our centrepieces were provided by the venue, I added little vases with flowers in from local florist Patricia’s Floral Fair. David-John had been to a lovely wedding at Stables Country Club and suggested we view it; the day we did it was set up for a wedding fair. An intimate, barn-like venue covered in fairylights, I fell in love with it instantly. I made our favours with my mother-in-law, which were heart- or flowershaped, green-coloured wax melts with the smell of ‘sea breeze’ to reflect mine and my husband’s love of the sea. 28
Our ceremony was beautiful our registrar was so lovely, and I was able to say, ‘I take my Viking husband’! David-John wore a traditional kilt and waistcoat. On the day we were very loved by each other and our family, we didn’t stop smiling – it was so special! I had always said I didn’t want a big dress, but chose a gown called Yasmine as I fell in love with the lace design. I accessorised with a rose gold belt and tiara. My shoes were covered in sequins, like Cinderella’s, which were from Kurt Kieger – I wore white cowgirl boots for the evening though! My bridal bouquet was made from dried flowers. The tables had wooden numbers, and we also had a welcome sign of a Viking saying ‘pick a seat not a side, we are all family after the knot is tied’. 29 REAL WEDDINGS

The best man spoke about me being a step-mum and I was in tears. My sister-in-law came over from Virginia for the wedding and did my hair and make-up, it was special to spend this time together before the wedding. We hired a bagpiper, Ed Arnold, for after the ceremony which was beautiful. We then had the venue’s resident DJ who was great; at one point, we were all signing Sweet Caroline, even my mother-in-law was stood on her chair dancing I loved it. My brother approached my husband before I came down the aisle to give him his ring which had my dad’s ashes in. When I came down the aisle and saw he was wearing it, I welled up. It was special to still have him be part of the day. My bridesmaids all picked their own dresses and styles, all I asked was that the shade be emerald-green. 30

IT MUST BE Abigail and Lloyd’s city-centre wedding was a sight to behold Images courtesy of Sam Sanders Photography love, love, love 32
Abigail and Lloyd met in school when they were teenagers, Abigail recalls, “He was a year older so I never knew he existed until my best friend introduced me to him outside school; but I realised in later life that we actually went on a school trip to Belgium and had a picture together for the school magazine!” Abigail continues, “I remembered how much fun we had together back then, and that for us was the first attraction to each other; a lot of laughs and no cares in the world and we continue to live our lives like that.” Fast-forward to a Christmas Eve proposal in 2020, Lloyd popped the question in the couple’s first house. “Our house was being renovated so it was an absolute mess with dust, paint etc!” shares Abigail. “He decided that year that we weren’t buying gifts for Christmas, and I just wanted a card. So, we exchanged our cards (which mine was a funny card!) he handed me his which said ‘Fiancée’, so I was confused at that point, but he thought it was funny to write only joking inside the card but then as I turned to the back of the card he got down on one knee and had written ‘Will you marry me?’. The big date was set, 29th July, 2023, with the Cloisters Suite at the Holiday Inn Bolton, setting the scene. SETTING THE SCENE Having attended a wedding at the Cloisters Suite previously, the couple knew they loved the venue. “It’s a renovated church so it has the high ceiling and big arched stained-glass windows and that’s what we fell in love with,” shares Abigail. “I had the best of both worlds: a church feel in a modern hotel!” For the finer details of the day, the couple had favours of Polos with a ‘mint to be’ sticker, while the centrepieces and other décor were created by Flossypots Events. “I wanted large white cherry blossom trees as I walked down the aisle with petals, and on the tables large bunches of flowers with candles in vases,” shares Abigail. “I wanted it to feel like you were walking into the wilderness in spring, I just wanted flowers everywhere!”. The big-day bake was a five-tier plain white cake with a colourful floral wrap around the stand, to give the impression the cake had flowers floating around it. The cake decoration, and place names were both made by Abigail, the latter were cards with the guest’s name featuring pastel flowers. “We also had a light-up ‘Mr & Mrs’ sign and dancefloor which I loved, and it really made the night more special!” adds Abigail. LOOKING THE PART Bride Abigail wore an A-line lace gown which was originally strapless, however she added lace off-the-shoulder cap sleeves and also a delicate diamond belt. “Not forgetting my full-length veil!” adds Abigail. “I chose this style as I love lace and it fit my theme, plus the shape of it made me feel confident and I could move freely without feeling restricted especially for the nighttime!” Lloyd looked dapper in a black tuxedo while his groomsmen had different suits with sage-green accessories to complement the bridesmaids’ dresses, “I had five bridesmaids all different shapes and sizes, so I wanted to make sure they were all comfortable with what they wore,” shares Abigail. “We found 33 REAL WEDDINGS
a gorgeous sage-green off-the-shoulder chiffon dress – they were my greenery to my flower as I like the say!” THE BIG DAY On the day the newlyweds obviously felt a mixture of emotions! “We were both excited, but also nervous – me more than him!” shares Abigail, “There was so much love in the room which made us feel so special!” The couple chose two songs for their first dance, Toto’s Africa and The Other Side by Jason Derulo. “We did a little routine for the last song and everyone cheered, so that for me was a moment to remember. There were so many moments that stood out, from the first look with my dad, to walking down the aisle, then our speeches and the big party in the evening!” To entertain guests, the couple hired a magician during the meal who stayed until the evening reception started. “He actually performed magic to us on one of our dates when we were younger,” recalls Abigail, “We found him at a wedding fair and thought it was meant to be, we had to have him! It was a hit with all the guests too! “One funny moment, as we were about to the start the speeches, a relative came in from the bar, which everyone in the room all turned to look at her in silence, she had to pay for her drinks but her dad’s bank card needed a pin for which she shouted across the room what was his pin number – it was a had to be there moment to see how funny it was! Another one was, our photographer asked us to walk through the town centre for some pictures, it was a warm sunny Saturday afternoon with everyone sat outside the pubs, they started shouting and cheering us on, a few people made comments like ‘run’ or ‘it’s never too late’ haha!” There wasn’t a particular part or person that made it any more special than it already was for Abigail and Lloyd, “From morning to night the wedding coordinator kept checking on us,” shares Abigail. “Seeing my 18-month-old boy walk down to be with his dad was emotional, the food was superb, the speeches were funny but also moving, additionally, my father-daughter dance to then having a mini rave in the evening with light-up batons – they were all just standout moments for us!” 34
