Choosing the perfect entertainment for your big day can be stressful. Trying to find something that suits your budget, keeps your friends and family happy, and also fits the vibe of your day can feel impossible, but don’t panic! There is a supplier out there for everyone, from bands, DJs, live painters, singing waiters and much more! For my own wedding, I booked an agency that provides hundreds of bands across the UK. My husband and I spent hours going through the acts within our budget, and we eventually decided on a local band that we loved. On the night, they played two sets with a DJ in between, and our guests loved them. It was definitely one of the highlights of our day. If you’re struggling to decide on an act, contact several companies and see which one you vibe with. Before booking, read the company’s reviews and check out their price guide to make sure you can afford their services. Think about what you both love and what will get your guests dancing and talking about your wedding for years to come. To help you plan the perfect entertainment, we’ve put together a feature highlighting some of the North West’s best companies. Happy planning! The wedding venue’s Michelinstarred restaurant was one of 48 finalists to make it to the awards, following a rigorous judging process by handpicked tourism industry experts from over 300 eligible local winners. Richard Swale, the head chef at Askham Hall, said: “We are over the moon with this achievement. The food at Askham Hall is a real passion for our entire team – a complete labour of love. We nurture our produce, literally, from field to fork, and play a part in every step of the process, from growing our own fruit, vegetables, herbs and flowers to rearing our own meat, so you can imagine the pride that we’re feeling at this recognition. To be named as one of the best food offerings in England is a dream come true. I’d like to thank our team for all their hard work and dedication in getting us here.” To find out more, visit www.askhamhall.co.uk NEWS Nearlywed DELECTABLE DELIGHTS Stove Restaurant and Bar on the Langdale Estate, home to the Brimstone Hotel, is offering afternoon tea for the very first time. Due to popular demand, Scoff Paper, the world’s only maker of edible greeting cards for dogs, has launched a range of delicious wedding celebration cards in irresistible chicken and bacon flavours to ensure well-loved pooches are included in the big day. Cards such as ‘be our ring bearer’, ‘be my best man’, and ‘be my bridesmaid’, have been created to help owners create a sense of occasion as they invite their four-legged family member to play a key part in their special day. Scoff Paper, dedicated to making tasty and unique treats for dogs, also produces pens with dog-friendly, edible ink, so loved-up couples and wedding guests can write personalised messages knowing it will be safe for pooches to scoff. We make our cards based on consumer demand, and in the last year, the request for wedding-related products has rocketed. We produce cards for major high-street retailers, but we are always happy to consider bespoke requests, like pet marriage certificates, place names and personalised cards too.” Head over to www.scoffpaper.com for more information. DRINK IT ALL IN Healthier choice prosecco and sparkling rosé brand ThinK Wine has announced that its retro VW Campervan can now be used for weddings. It’s available to hire with or without staff, serving up not just any prosecco but low-sugar, vegan, organic wines that taste amazing while retaining all of the percentage volume. ThinK Wine founder Kath Jones tells us: “Until now, we’ve been using the van for festivals and at venues that want to make a ‘wow’ moment of their welcome drinks. But we’re ready to start hiring her out for weddings, engagement parties and hen dos in the North West, and we couldn’t be more excited. The van is so gorgeous. It makes the ideal backdrop for wedding photos, especially when dressed in flowers to match your colour scheme. It’s the perfect Instagrammable moment! Not only does our van look absolutely stunning in pictures, but you can, of course, serve up our delicious low-sugar prosecco and sparkling rosé to guests as an arrival drink at your venue. The benefits of serving ThinK Wine at your wedding include the fact that it’s fully vegan, organic and low-sugar, but with all the taste and the same 11% ABV. Plus, it’s low in sulphites too, which means less of a hangover for your guests the next day. There’s no minimum spend in terms of the wine, and we can add on dressing and décor to suit your vision if required. We can send our staff along, or if you’d prefer to use the staff at your chosen venue, that’s fine too. We want it to be flexible and accessible for everyone. And if, for some reason, the van doesn’t capture your heart, then you can just order our delicious wines in cans, bottles or minis instead. They’re perfect for hen dos, engagement parties, spa days and, of course, weddings too.” Visit www.thinkwinegroup.co.uk/pages/enquire for more info. Lois and Ben incorporated their love of dusky blue into their wedding at Shireburn Arms Images courtesy of Matt Herrington Photography OUR DREAM DAY Lois and Ben met through mutual friends in 2017. “Our relationship blossomed and in August 2022, Ben popped the question,” says Lois. “We were away for the weekend in the Lake District and while on a walk up Loughrigg Fell, he asked me to be his wife. Ben had already secretly asked my dad for his permission the day before.” Read on to see some of Lois’ favourite moments from their big day... REAL WEDDINGS 31
Sadly, my grandad passed away a couple of years ago. It was really important that I incorporated something into the day to remember him by. We decided to have a memory chair on the front row with a small bunch of roses and a simple sign in a silver frame. I spent what felt like an eternity scrolling through Pinterest and wedding magazines trying to create the perfect look for our wedding and we could not have been happier with how it turned out on the day. We love walking in the Forest of Bowland, so the Shireburn Arms was the perfect place for our wedding. It incorporated the beautiful scenery that we love and we adored the intimate feel of the venue. To decorate the venue, we chose drapes hanging from the ceiling, an ivory chiffon fairylight background and an ivory skirt hung around the ceremony table. This added to the romantic, soft look that I had hoped to achieve. We wanted the flowers to be a main feature of our décor. We had flowers lining the aisle, a large display in front of the ceremony table and one on the table. We went for a simple Victoria sponge cake with vanilla icing decorated with roses and green foliage. We had a really intimate day, so our table plan had to reflect that. We had four guest tables and a sweetheart table for Ben and I, as we wanted time together during our magical day. Our centrepieces were beautiful. We had a range of ivory taper and pillar candles in glass holders, silver-beaded charger plates and ivory napkins that matched the chair sashes. 32
Ben wore a suit by Moss. It was a navy design with gold detailing. He finished the look with a blue shirt, a waistcoat and tan shoes. I remember Ben and I looking around the room at the wedding breakfast and just being in awe of how wonderful everything was. I felt very calm throughout the day. The only time I had to catch my breath was a few seconds before walking down the aisle. Ben felt calm and excited as well. The formality of the day was daunting, but as soon as we were together at the ceremony, everything was perfect. My dress was called Chloé by Enzoani. It was a romantic gown that featured subtle 3D floral details, hand-beaded slim straps, and a full Chantilly ivory lace underlay. The second I saw it, I gasped in the shop; it was breathtaking. I loved the intricate detail and the fact that I hadn’t seen anything quite like it before. For the evening, I changed into a fishtail lace dress, which I accessorised with a pearl belt and heels. We had a violin player for the ceremony and drinks reception. Everyone loved him! He was a fantastic musician and it felt very romantic to have music playing while we all drank champagne. For our honeymoon, we went to Mexico for two weeks. I planned the trip and we had a wonderful time. The food was incredible, the hotel was amazing and it felt like paradise. Our favourite part was swimming with turtles. Our photographer, Matt Herrington, was fantastic and made everyone feel at ease. REAL WEDDINGS 33

GOLDEN Melissa and Brandon opted for a neutral and gold colour palette for their big day celebration at The Glass House Images courtesy of Dan Wootton Photography You’re 36
Melissa and Brandon met when her college began working with Brandon’s work to learn about business studies. “I came across his profile six months later and we matched on Tinder,” says Melissa. “We went on our first date and we have been inseparable ever since. It just felt really natural to be in one another’s company.” The couple had been together for just over seven years when Brandon proposed. “I chose my engagement ring and Brandon organised everything else,” shares the bride. “I knew he was going to propose while we were in Rhodes, Greece, but I didn’t know when exactly.” SETTING THE SCENE “When it came to our venue, I wanted something cosy and welcoming with attention to detail,” explains Melissa. “We had visited a few local venues, but they just didn’t feel quite right. When we visited The Glass House, we both agreed straight away that it was ideal in terms of atmosphere and as it was close to home, it was the perfect fit. The pricing was clear and the whole day was so easy to plan. The wedding coordinators were fantastic to liaise with in finalising all of the details. We met a lot of our suppliers at the venue’s showcase, so it was nice to chat with them and get a good feel for what the day would be like.” Melissa created all of the stationery and table plans. “I work as a graphic designer, so from a design perspective, everything was tied into the same black, white and gold theme, from the invites to the seating plans and newspapers,” recalls Melissa. “We had our own Mr & Mrs Howard signature and emblem on everything, so it was branded specifically for us, which was a lovely touch. I used gold foiling on a lot of the stationery, seating plan and welcome sign and we also had a ‘wedding memories’ frame filled with close family’s wedding photos, which was a nice way to include everyone from both sides of the family.” The centrepieces were sourced by Melissa. “I changed from my original choice of faux green and white floral centrepieces a few months before the wedding to keep the vibe the same as the stationery,” reveals the bride. “I opted for gold candelabras and the room dresser put candles and white roses around them to tie everything together. I wanted to be able to keep my flowers, so I ordered them online from Hidden Botanics. They were a mixture of dried and faux flowers. “Our cake was a retro heart-style design,” adds Melissa. “Everyone loved it and it was very us; we cut the cake with a champagne glass each. We then ate it out of the glass for a great photo opportunity. We loved it. I think cake cuttings are a bit awkward sometimes, so this was perfect for us.” To tie the theme together, the couple incorporated wisteria on the venue’s beams. “I went to one last showcase at The Glass House just before the wedding and it was a must-have,” explains Melissa. “I’m so glad I did it; it looked beautiful and tied everything together. “We wanted our guests to chat with one another and we also had a few fussy eaters, so we went for a feasting-style roast dinner,” continues the bride. “Rather than being served each course, our guests shared large plates and boards of meat, vegetables and potatoes, which got everyone to chat and share our love for good food.” 37 REAL WEDDINGS

DRESSED TO IMPRESS “My dress was called Tori by Sincerity Bridal, which I bought from Lulu Browns Bridal,” remembers Melissa. “I am a comfort queen and after months of preparing to look absolutely flawless, I wanted to eat everything on the day and still look and feel good! So, I opted for a stunning gown with a square neckline, a low back that was fitted to the waist and a long train with button details going down the whole back. I was going to have organza sleeves added, but I’m glad I didn’t because it was beautiful as it was. It also had pockets, which is every bride’s dream. When I went to try on my dress, I put a veil on just to see and it was so gorgeous! It had tiny rhinestones on it that sparkled as I walked and they caught the light. It was as long as my dress and with my gown being so plain, it just added that glam edge I was after without it being too much.” Brandon rented suits for the groomsmen and himself from Jakes & Co. “The groomsmen had a green, tweed-style waistcoat to match the bridesmaids,” says the bride. “I took my maid-of-honour and bridesmaid to Bridesmaid by JB’s showroom, not knowing what colour or style to go for. They tried on lots of options and colours, and Toni was great as she explained she made them to order so we could have a top style of one with a different skirt style of another for the perfect look. The fabrics were super soft and flattering, plus the girls said they were so comfortable. I took measurements for a child-size bridesmaid’s dress for my cousin and it was perfect.” TIME TO CELEBRATE “We had a saxophonist for the drinks reception, which set the mood, and we also had a saxophonist in the evening who worked with the DJ to get people dancing all night long,” shares Melissa. “We had a selfie mirror for guests to take photos with props and we got to see everyone’s photos after as well, which was a great keepsake. The evening DJ from Dancefloor Couture LTD was so good and all of our friends absolutely loved it.” MEMORABLE MOMENTS “I felt really calm and it didn’t really hit me until the last half hour when everyone was trying to get photos and we were travelling to the venue,” explains the bride. “Brandon was very nervous! His best man, Jack, had to help him take a few deep breaths. We were both so nervous about saying our vows in front of everyone, but facing the registrar, we couldn’t see anyone, so it was absolutely fine! “The bridal suite at The Glass House was a godsend; it had a huge private toilet, and with such a big dress, it was great,” adds Melissa. “There was also a private dressing area for the bridal party to touch up their make-up and I also had a hair change for the evening.” The couple had their fox-red labrador, Reggie, join them for the ceremony. “He absolutely stole the show,” recalls Melissa. “Everyone loved him; he was the ring bearer and it was just too cute. “My maid-of-honour, Eloise, carried out every single thing I asked her to do; she was amazing,” continues Melissa. “I couldn’t have asked for a better person to manage my very demanding bridezilla duties! Special thanks must also go to Nicole at Dedicated HQ. She honestly gave me so much confidence on the day; all the bridal prep was amazing, as was the nutrition and just general support with managing stress. I wouldn’t have felt as amazing as I did on the day without her.” HONEYMOON “We went to the Amalfi Coast for a week,” shares the bride. “It was fantastic; we cooked with the locals, went on food and wine tours and learned about the history of the towns. It was such a fabulous experience; the whole trip was one we will never forget!” REAL WEDDINGS 39
