As someone who has only worn make-up once for my own wedding a few years ago, my knowledge is definitely lacking, and, much to my friends’ amusement, I can’t tell you the difference between highlighter, foundation and concealer! Luckily, our region is full of some wonderful beauty experts who know all the tips and tricks to ensure you look your best on your big day. If you’re a bit clueless, like me, don’t panic. When looking for a make-up artist, make sure you read their reviews and that you like the look of their work. Most importantly, be honest with them. Whether you wear full glam on a regular basis, only add a touch of foundation, or have no clue where to start, they are there to help you. A good supplier will reassure you and give suggestions to ensure you look and feel like the best version of yourself. I highly recommend having a trial with your supplier before the wedding. Your trial will give you time to talk to your make-up artist, test out looks and ensure you’re happy with the finished result before the wedding day. To help give you some ideas, we’ve rounded up fashion and beauty experts in the area and asked for their tips and trend predictions to ensure you look amazing. Happy planning! Monochrom Laura and Phil opted for a black and white colour scheme for their big day at Knowsley Hall Images courtesy of Lindsay Betts Photography MAGIC Laura and Phil lived in the same apartment block when they first met. “I moved in 2013 and kept noticing Phil,” says Laura. “I lived in the top-floor apartment, so I had a view of the whole street and I kept seeing him. I decided one day, after a night out with my friend, to put a note on his car. The note read, ‘I think you’re lovely; here is my number.’ The next day, he texted me and we decided to meet up. He was in the army at the time and had to go away for three months, so we had little to no contact. Once he got back, we went on our first date to watch a Manchester United vs. Stoke City match, and the rest is history.” Phil proposed on Laura’s 30th birthday. “He hired out the whole balcony at the Hotel Gotham in Manchester and got down on one knee,” shares the bride. “It was around the time of lockdown; we had originally planned to go to New York, but the trip had to be cancelled. We then planned to go to Edinburgh, but again, plans were cancelled and so the proposal was a complete shock.” Read on to see some of Laura’s favourite moments from their big day... REAL WEDDINGS 25

Our centrepieces were flowers that I had made in the months leading up to the wedding. We got engaged on Saturday and the following Friday, we went for a viewing at Knowsley Hall. We instantly fell in love with the venue; it was the only place we had visited as an engaged couple and we put a deposit down the following week. I fell in love with its grandeur and the staff were unbelievably welcoming. On the wedding day, a beautiful man called Joseph, who worked at Knowsley Hall, looked after my nan who is wheelchair bound. He was amazing and looked after her the whole day like he was a part of the family. For our favours, I donated money to a charity called The Milly-Rose Stirrup Foundation that was set up in memory of my good friend’s daughter who tragically passed away. I created a table with black-and-white pictures of our grandparents and our parents on their wedding days. I decided to create a retro black-and-white picture of each guest and me as place names and favours. Pictures are a huge part of my life and it was a personal touch that every guest loved. The theme of the day was flowers and there were blooms everywhere. I own a flower company called Fleur De Fillu, so there were high expectations for flowers to be a part of the day. My mum was obsessed with making sprinkle cakes for us during lockdown. We didn’t want to spend a huge amount on a cake, so we asked mum to make one as something personal to us. She didn’t disappoint and made one; however, on the day, she surprised us with the most wonderful three-tier cake made by Classic Cakes. It was black and white to match our theme and it had a personalised topper of us, our children and the dog. 26

I wore a Ronald Joyce dress from Dream Dress Bridal. I accessorised with a veil that my mum wore on her wedding day to my dad 36 years ago, which was a lovely touch. I adore my wedding ring, which was made by the amazing Slack & Andrews. Unfortunately, my grandma passed away before she could see us get married, so I had the diamonds from her eternity ring added to my wedding band. My bridesmaids opted for black floor-length dresses. We were both nervous about the ceremony but excited to have everyone we love in one room. Just before I walked down the aisle, we noticed that my sister’s dress had a huge hole in it, so we had to get a lovely lady from housekeeping to come and quickly sew it up! Phil chose a suit from Marks and Spencer that was slightly different from the black tuxes that we hired for the groomsmen from Freedmans. We had Matt & Donal come and play traditional Irish music with a twist. They were the best and our guests loved them. We both come from Irish backgrounds and it was important to incorporate that into our day. We also had the most amazing DJ called Andy Murphy. I never left the dancefloor from the minute the music started. REAL WEDDINGS 27

OF THE LAKES Rebecca and Kyle had a magical celebration at Lodore Falls Hotel & Spa surrounded by their friends and family Images courtesy of Jason Chambers Photography The beauty 30

Rebecca and Kyle met over 10 years ago. “Kyle first spotted me on New Year’s Eve, but we never spoke,” says Rebecca. “A few weeks later, on my birthday, Kyle came up to speak to me and have a dance and the rest is history.” Kyle proposed while the couple was in London. “The year he proposed, he didn’t give anything away at all; he was so calm,” shares the bride. “It was December 2021. We always go to Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park and have a few drinks beforehand. He was desperate to go to our favourite rooftop bar, so much so that we were there when it opened. He went to the bar and I went outside onto the terrace and found us a table. Little did I know he was telling the girl at the bar that he was going to propose and could she record it? She didn’t get a chance, of course, because he came back to the table so fast and got it over and done with that she was still busy getting us a bottle of champagne! We drank the champagne and he told me the stories about getting the ring and how he chose it.” SETTING THE SCENE “Lodore Falls Hotel & Spa has always been a special place to us,” explains Rebecca. “When we are in the Lake District, we always call in for a drink with our dog. We have stayed there before and it was one of the best nights we’ve ever had, so we knew it was going to be difficult to beat. It felt like a second home to us and I think that’s why we were both so relaxed on the morning of the wedding because we were there. We chose a classic and timeless theme with neutral colours throughout. I told Honeys Hideaway and Willow & Fig that we wanted white flowers, greenery and lots of disco balls everywhere. We love disco music, so the balls were totally us. We also incorporated a lot of pearls and a few diamantés in the bridesmaids’ belts and jewellery, my shoes and the cake. Our cake was literally incredible! Kyle’s mam made it for us and it looked wonderful.” The couple donated money to the Dogs Trust and gave their guests pins as favours. They also provided coaches to transport their guests from Irving of Dalston. DRESSED TO IMPRESS “My dress was called Elliot by Made With Love from Belle Lueur Bridal,” reveals Rebecca. “It was the total opposite of what I thought I wanted! I didn’t even want to try on a fitted dress, but Salli at Belle Lueur Bridal encouraged me to try it on to rule it out. Then, when she added the detachable skirt, I knew it was the one. I went back to collect my dress a few months after ordering it and purchased my incredible veil. I was obsessed with it! Kyle wore a Marc Darcy tuxedo that he purchased from Goodfellows Menswear. We hired the boy’s tuxes, but Kyle wanted something that he could keep forever.” Rebecca’s bridesmaids chose one-shoulder satin dresses with a draped back. They accessorised with belts that the bride purchased from Etsy. TIME TO CELEBRATE To keep their guests entertained, the couple hired Simon Vogt Weddings to be their master of ceremonies and DJ. “He was great because he took all 31 REAL WEDDINGS

the organising away from us,” recalls the bride. “Kyle and I were just guests at our own wedding, so we were able to let our hair down and enjoy it too. Magician Scott John was there for the reception drinks when Kyle and I were having photos taken and I have since been told he was blowing minds! He is literally magic; I can’t fathom how he does what he does. He was an amazing asset to have on our wedding day. “We also hired soul and Motown singer Scotty D, who was absolutely incredible and filled the dancefloor before the night guests even arrived,” adds Rebecca. “Lastly, Cat from Saxophonique was absolutely mind-blowing, and one of my mum and dad’s friends didn’t realise she was playing live! She was amazing at getting involved with the crowd on the dancefloor and keeping everyone vibing along with her music – just sensational. The dancefloor was full from the early doors and it was just incredible. At one point, we had Simon, Scotty D and Saxophonique all playing September by Earth, Wind & Fire!” MEMORABLE MOMENTS “Our wedding was honestly incredible,” says Rebecca. “My dad asked me before we set off to go down the aisle how I felt and I said I couldn’t even describe it because it’s nothing I’ve ever felt before. We both felt incredibly lucky to get married at a place so close to our hearts. The sun came out as soon as the bridesmaids walked out and it was hot, so we were able to get married outside exactly as we’d envisaged. Our photographer, Jason Chambers, got every picture we could have possibly imagined. We were just blown away by how perfect the day was and how lucky we were. “In the run-up to the day, Kyle kept asking what we’d be asked to say during the vows,” continues the bride. “I kept saying I don’t know; I have never done it before. Nerves got the better of him and he kept jumping to say ‘I do’ before he was supposed to. He said ‘I do’ three times before the registrar said he could now say ‘I do’. It had everyone laughing at the ceremony.” All of the couple’s suppliers made their big day perfect. “All of our companies were second to none,” shares Rebecca. “Each and every one of them worked together to make the day more than we could have ever imagined. The wedding team at Lodore Falls Hotel & Spa was sensational. They genuinely couldn’t do enough for us and Jason Chambers is absolute magic. We will be forever grateful to him for what he has produced post-wedding. Our family and friends were also just incredible. We had the most amazing day celebrating with them all and everybody was so incredibly generous. We left the day full of love and it took us well over a week to calm down from it!” HONEYMOON “We had a mini-moon in Windermere, where we stayed at Brimstone Hotel & Spa for one night and Aphrodite’s Tranquil Suites for two,” explains Rebecca. “Our honeymoon will be in September, when we will be going to Dubai and Stella Island in Crete. Sam Little from Hays Travel planned our honeymoon for us. She took the stress out of planning and has put together something incredible.” REBECCA AND KYLE’S TOP TIPS “Take moments to look around and take everything in,” shares the couple. “Try your hardest to just relax in the morning. Everyone kept saying that they couldn’t believe how chilled and steady-paced the morning was and I believe that set us up for a relaxed day. We remember every single part of our day and we are so grateful that we do, because we didn’t spend any time thinking about what was going on or what’s happening next; we just lived in the moment and we will cherish that forever.” REAL WEDDINGS 33
