NEWS NearlywedCatch up on news from around London EDITOR’S REVIEW - GAUCHO BROADGATE Gaucho is undoubtedly the ultimate destination for celebrating life’s special moments! With several locations throughout London, it stands out as a must-visit for steak lovers, featuring premium cuts sourced from top suppliers and expertly prepared by talented chefs. I had the wonderful opportunity to visit Gaucho Broadgate with my partner, and we were in for an evening we would never forget. Nestled close to the vibrant Liverpool Street, this restaurant is a true culinary treasure, offering not just fantastic food but also an impressive selection of drinks and a stylish atmosphere that’s perfect for special occasions. As we walked hand in hand through the lively East End our eagerness heightened as we neared Gaucho Broadgate, greeted by its breathtaking all-glass exterior shimmering in the city lights. Once inside, we were captivated by the lively yet intimate vibe of the top floor before making our way down the elegant spiral staircase, where the mezzanine offered a peaceful retreat. The décor was visually stunning, inspired by the beautiful landscapes of Argentina, featuring rich textures and warm hues that created a sense of comfort and luxury. As we settled in, we kicked off our experience with the delightful Kiwi Gimlet Cocktail made with Roku Gin, kiwi cordial and a citrus blend, while the attentive staff guided us through the menu. We were eager to dive into the diverse selections, celebrating Argentinian flavours crafted with the finest ingredients and presented with artistic flair. The team even showcased a steak board, allowing us to see the various cuts available before making our selections. We started our meal with the Seared Diver Scallops, beautifully prepared with Nduja butter, aguachile verde and a sprinkle of lemon crumb. It was a delightful beginning before we moved on to our main courses. I loved the Dry Rubbed Spatchcock Chicken, served with a zesty kiwi and lime hot sauce bursting with flavour, perfectly complemented by creamy mashed potatoes. My partner was thrilled with the Churrasco De Lomo Steak, a spiral-cut beef marinated in garlic, parsley and olive oil, paired with Truffle Dauphinoise—layers of potatoes baked in truffle cream that was simply divine! Each bite was a celebration of flavours. The wine selection was just as impressive, showcasing a variety of exquisite wines that paired wonderfully with our dishes. We chose a bottle of Pommery Brut Royal, a lively and delicate wine with delightful berry notes. For dessert, I couldn’t resist the Dulce De Leche Cheesecake topped with dulce Chantilly cream, hazelnuts, buckwheat crumble and confit cherries, while my partner indulged in the Chocolate Torte, which featured a rich chocolate biscuit, coffee, dulce de leche cream, caramelised hazelnuts and vanilla ice cream. We wrapped up our meal with a Strawberry Negroni that was truly invigorating! It combined The Botanist Gin infused with freeze-dried strawberry, Lillet Rosé, Campari, Amaro Santoni, Fernet Branca, and homemade fresh strawberry cordial. Throughout our dining experience, our waiter was incredibly attentive and professional, making us feel truly special. He made us feel comfortable from the moment we sat down, ensuring we had everything needed for a delightful experience. I can honestly say it was the best meal I’ve ever had in the UK, thanks to the stunning setting, exquisite dishes, expertly crafted cocktails and romantic atmosphere. I highly recommend this restaurant for pre-wedding date nights, offering a perfect escape from wedding planning. Plus, there are several private dining spaces available for special occasions. As we hit our 100th issue, we look back over the last 17 years to reflect how weddings have adapted through the years Weddings have consistently mirrored the era in which they take place, showcasing shifts in society, economic factors, technological progress, and changing cultural norms. Between 2008 and 2025, we’ve seen a significant evolution in how couples plan their special day. Although love continues to be the foundation, the methods of celebrating marriage have changed in ways that seemed unbelievable just a few decades ago. The classic elements like white dresses, banquet halls, church ceremonies, and extensive guest lists were still popular. However, this era also saw a shift towards personalisation. Couples began to embrace the traditional wedding structure while looking for ways to infuse their unique touch—be it through themed decorations, signature drinks or personalised vows. A significant factor influencing weddings during this time was the emergence of Pinterest and Instagram. With Instagram’s launch in 2010, it quickly became a go-to source for wedding ideas, while Pinterest transformed the wedding planning landscape. Brides-to-be could explore countless boards filled with colour schemes, floral designs and dress inspirations, leading to weddings that were more visually curated than ever before. This period gave rise to the concept of “Pinterest-perfect” weddings, where visual appeal often took precedence over practicality or budget. In the wake of the 2008 financial crisis, many couples began to reconsider lavish expenditures, considering what a wedding could and should be. This shift led to the rise of the DIY (Do-It-Yourself) wedding trend, where brides and grooms opted for handmade decorations, unique finds from Etsy, and repurposed materials to craft stylish yet cost-effective celebrations. The DIY movement encouraged creativity and resourcefulness, allowing couples to personalise their weddings without breaking the bank. Rustic barn weddings became increasingly popular, characterised by their charming, laid-back atmosphere. Elements such as Mason jar centrepieces, burlap table runners, and wooden signage became defining features of this time, reflecting a desire for authenticity and a connection to nature. 2016–2020: THE DIGITAL AGE AND THE SHIFT TOWARD INCLUSIVITY By 2016, social media had woven itself into the fabric of wedding culture. Couples began crafting unique hashtags and inviting guests to share live moments. The pursuit of Instagram-worthy aesthetics heavily influenced wedding planning, shaping choices for venues, floral designs and dress styles. During this time, technology integration surged. Drones provided stunning aerial photography, wedding planning apps simplified organisation, and virtual reality previews of venues became accessible. By 2020, live-streaming weddings had gained popularity, enabling friends and family from afar to participate virtually. Conversely, many couples opted for unplugged ceremonies, encouraging guests to set aside their phones and be fully present. Additionally, a growing number of couples chose non-religious ceremonies or handfasting rituals, reflecting a shift away from traditional religious affiliations. This era also saw the rise of bold colour schemes featuring rich jewel tones and monochrome themes, along with mismatched bridesmaid dresses. Brides began to embrace variety, allowing their bridesmaids to wear different styles for comfort. Alternative wedding attire, such as jumpsuits, gained traction, and colourful gowns and capes became fashionable. As awareness of climate change grew, eco-friendly weddings emerged as a popular choice. Couples turned to digital invitations, locally sourced catering, secondhand dresses, and zero-waste decorations. Sustainable practices appealed not only to budget-conscious couples but also to those committed to minimising their environmental footprint. Rather than traditional ballrooms, some couples opted for industrial venues and warehouses, while others embraced bohemian-themed celebrations. 2020 - THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC AND THE REINVENTION OF WEDDINGS The year 2020 marked a significant change in the wedding industry. The Covid-19 pandemic prompted couples to rethink their celebrations, resulting in trends that continue to influence weddings today. Prior to 2020, big days typically featured large guest lists of more than 150 people, but pandemic restrictions caused a shift towards smaller gatherings. This led to the rise of micro-weddings and elopements as popular choices. Even after restrictions were lifted, many couples preferred intimate celebrations, discovering that they 16

could enjoy a heartfelt occasion without the stress of a large event. With travel limitations and social distancing measures in place, couples got creative in finding ways to include friends and family who couldn’t be there physically. Virtual weddings, live-streamed ceremonies, and recorded vows became increasingly popular, with even high-end venues offering live-streaming options. As indoor venues faced closures or capacity limits, couples sought out outdoor locations such as backyards, gardens, beaches and national parks, with some even turning their homes into wedding venues. Due to numerous weddings being postponed in 2020, venues became heavily booked for 2021 and beyond. In response, couples began scheduling their weddings on weekdays or during off-peak seasons, like winter instead of spring or summer. The pandemic also continued to heighten awareness around waste and sustainability. With fewer guests, there was a reduction in food waste, and couples started opting for eco-friendly choices such as digital invitations, pre-owned dresses and locally sourced flowers. Many couples found themselves letting go of traditional expectations to focus on what truly mattered to them—whether that meant a cosy ceremony at home, a courthouse wedding or waiting until they could celebrate in a more traditional manner. 2021–2025: INTIMATE, TECH-DRIVEN, AND EXPERIENCE-FOCUSED WEDDINGS The pandemic has brought about a lasting change in the wedding landscape: smaller, more personal ceremonies have become the standard. Rather than inviting more than 200 guests, couples are now choosing to celebrate with just 50 or fewer of their closest friends and family. In this new era, couples are prioritising immersive experiences for their guests.Weddings now feature interactive food stations, live art displays, curated music playlists, and weekend-long festivities at boutique hotels or unique locations. The emphasis has shifted from adhering to traditions to crafting unforgettable experiences that reflect the couple’s unique personalities. Sustainability has transitioned from a trend to a fundamental practice. Many couples are choosing lab-grown diamonds, plant-based catering options, and eco-friendly decorations. Renting wedding dresses, selecting seasonal blooms, and avoiding single-use plastics have become standard choices rather than exceptions. The classic white dress and black tuxedo are no longer the go-to options. Brides are also opting for vibrant gowns, stylish jumpsuits or even chic two-piece outfits, while grooms are exploring bold colours and unconventional looks. Ceremonies are also evolving; some couples prefer standing ceremonies without seating, while others weave in storytelling elements instead of traditional vows. Perhaps the most notable change is that weddings are no longer dictated by societal norms. The pressure to host a lavish event has diminished, allowing couples the freedom to celebrate in a way that truly resonates with them. THE FUTURE OF WEDDINGS The transformation of wedding celebrations from the opulence of the early 2000s to the personalised and intimate gatherings of the 2020s has been remarkable. Despite these changes, the core of weddings remains the same: a joyful celebration of love and commitment. What has shifted is the way couples express their affection, embracing more flexibility, inclusivity and creativity than ever before. THE OLD TIMBER STORE hello@theoldtimberstore.co.uk | https://theoldtimberstore.co.uk The Old Timber Store exudes an enchanting atmosphere, making it the perfect spot for couples searching for the magic of simplicity within London’s iconic railway arches. The venue’s story dates back to the 1800s when horse-drawn carriages would trot through these impressive arches, which were considered a marvel of engineering at the time. Since the 1990s, the magnificent brick viaducts have been home to LASSCO’s flooring yard. A thoughtful renovation has preserved the essence of the space and transformed the arch into a unique venue for intimate wedding ceremonies, accommodating up to 60 guests. Couples can escape from the hustle and bustle of city life and step into a world where old London meets new beginnings. The Old Timber Store is nestled within Bermondsey’s best-kept secret: Maltby Street Market. The cobbled ropewalk is alive with weekly street food fusions from around the globe, but this dedicated arch offers a serene respite from urban chaos, complete with a magical backdrop. This picturesque railway arch beautifully combines the tranquillity of nature with the industrial charm of 19th-century London. It features a rustic setting adorned with splendid seasonal florals, with wooden beams creating the perfect canvas for weddings. The venue collaborates with recommended suppliers to bring those special touches to life. This offering will continue to grow as more wedding ceremonies are celebrated in this charming space. THE CADOGAN ARMS 02031 482 630 | https://thecadoganarms.london The Cadogan Arms, nestled in the heart of Chelsea’s bustling King’s Road, has secured a full licence to host weddings, adding to its reputation as a unique London location to celebrate all occasions. The Rose Room can be hired exclusively for up to 50 guests (standing) or 35 guests (seated), with a combination of separate tables and bar seats available and table service throughout. The bar area is great for group bookings, with cocktail and canapé receptions available seven days a week from 12 pm onwards, and flexible packages for smaller groups of between 10 to 17 guests are also available. The Dining Room can be reserved for semi-private or private use and can accommodate up to 40 seated and 70 standing guests. If couples feel something is missing, the team can work with them directly to create bespoke packages. Following the ambitious renovation that pays homage to two centuries spent serving the local community, the restoration of The Cadogan Arms recreated the lost early Georgian architectural details and ornate timber panelling of the original building, which are softened with warm velvets and floral-patterned fabrics — making for a stunning big-day backdrop. www.tomjeavonsphotography.co www.tomjeavonsphotography.co 20
