57 PLANNING SOS DEBRA MASSEY AT HAND ON HEART CELEBRANT For a civil ceremony, celebrants personalise content around your love story; they know you well and can deliver this wherever, however and whenever you wish. Book an appointment to give notices locally within 12 months of your planned date, remembering that the actual 2x2 appointment for legal paperwork can be in any registry office, not just your local option. This is worth bearing in mind as many councils, although legally bound to offer such appointments, massively restrict the number of such appointments. A registry office 2x2 legal option costs £57, giving notice £35 and £20 postage and administration fees, leaving you free to have all else just as you always hoped. This is at a fraction of the cost of having a registrar previously unknown to you leading the biggest event of your life. As the legal aspect of the wedding is already completed, you have no restrictions on content or timings. You can book a cheaper twilight wedding or choose unlicensed settings such as village halls, a forest, a garden, a rented property or a campsite, which are just some options I have worked with recently. Book your celebrant once your wedding date and venue are confirmed, as many have diaries being filled two years or more in advance. Likewise, consider if you're comfortable talking to this celebrant. I always meet clients face to face, ideally at the venue and do not charge for this. Check what's included in the price. Mine includes all drafts to perfect your ceremony, vow and reading suggestions, and symbolic actions such as handfasting stones, ring warming, or sand ceremonies. Some packages might consider these extras and charge more. A humanist won’t include religious details. As a civil celebrant, I blend cultural and religious content with non-religious detail, depending on requirements. Lastly, a good celebrant, as well as quality writing and presenting, is able to listen, put you at ease and work in partnership to create your day your way!
