The views expressed do not necessarily reflect those of the publisher. Your Herts & Beds Wedding is published six times a year. Wedding season is in full swing, and we’re already obsessed with the showstopping events across Herts and Beds that are already taking place! Couples continue pushing the boundaries to capture their love stories and personalities perfectly. They’re thinking outside the box on ways to create memorable days and ultimate celebrations with loved ones. Summer is a fabulous time of year to tie the knot for many reasons! Who doesn’t love the warmer weather and doesn’t get me started on the limitless colour palettes on offer? From neutral shades to pastel fantasies and bold pops of colour, you can’t go wrong! If you’ve just become engaged, we recommend starting to plan early to avoid disappointment. Many suppliers get booked up early during this popular season, some one to two years in advance. Embrace nature with abundant florals, as summer offers unlimited options compared to other seasons. We’re talking roses, gardenias, carnations, sunflowers, hydrangeas, dahlias, peonies, sweet peas and more! It’s important to note that some don’t handle heat well and could wilt quickly, so ensure blooms are kept cool with plenty of water and shade when possible. We all know the Great British weather can’t be trusted! Even if you’re exchanging vows at the peak of summer outside, it’s always essential to have a wet-weather backup plan in case of any summer showers – it’s better to be safe than sorry. Most venues will offer a space indoors as an alternative if the heavens open. Still, those opting for completely al fresco celebrations should consider covering such as a marquee or tipi. These structures are also perfect for heatwaves, providing plenty of shade if the sun beats down. In the late afternoon, utilise outdoor spaces by creating comfy outdoor settings so guests can sit back and relax while catching up with loved ones. For catering, keep things light, fresh and crisp, as the last thing guests will want is a hearty, heavy meal in the heat before dancing the night away. Some popular options include picnics, hog roasts, BBQs, delicate seafood, afternoon teas and more! Ensure seasonal food is being used to ensure top flavour and taste. Keep everyone cool with a retro ice cream van, an iced coffee truck or frozen cocktails for an added extra. It’s essential that guests are hydrated with cold water, juices or even fresh lemonade throughout the day. This issue is full of wedding inspiration from start to finish, covering all aspects of the planning process, from finding the perfect venue to dream-worthy gowns, the latest offers, beauty advice, venue styling and big-day bakes. It doesn’t stop there, as we also cover top honeymoon destinations worldwide for memorable trips together. So, pull up a chair, grab a cuppa and get reading! FOOD GLORIOUS FOOD Auberge du Lac at Brocket Hall is proud to announce its continued evolution in the culinary world with the celebrated Chef John Barber at its helm. Reopened in May 2023 after a three-year hiatus, the restaurant is experiencing a renaissance, blending tradition with innovative culinary concepts. Chef John Barber’s impressive career is highlighted by international experiences and a deep-seated passion for cooking inspired by his mother’s home cooking. His culinary journey, beginning at UCB College of Food, has taken him through prestigious kitchens from the Belfry Hotel to the Mandarin Oriental in Knightsbridge, extending to global experiences in Thailand and Paris. His arrival at Brocket Hall in 2022 marked the beginning of a new chapter for Auberge du Lac, characterised by his vision and expertise. A unique aspect of Auberge du Lac’s culinary journey is its dedicated kitchen garden, meticulously managed by Lucy Hawkins. This garden is a source of fresh, organic produce for the restaurant and a testament to sustainable culinary practices. Visitors can explore this green haven through the Garden Tour & Lunch events, with dates pending for both spring/summer and autumn seasons, offering a deeper connection with the food they enjoy at the restaurant. Situated at Brocket Hall, one of England’s finest stately homes, Auberge du Lac offers an incredible ‘Auberge Experience’ package for £420 per couple. This includes half a bottle of Champagne in the room upon arrival with chocolates, a seven-course tasting menu at Auberge du Lac, an overnight stay in the Melbourne Lodge and a full English breakfast served at the Melbourne Club. Book here: https://brocket-hall.co.uk/dine EXCHANGING VOWS Based in Hertford, Debra Massey at Hand On Heart Celebrant successfully launched earlier this year, with April proving to be a turning point in her role as a civil celebrant. The variety of opportunities continues to use her previous experience as an executive coach to glean unique details of each client’s love story. Debra’s degree in English, dance, and drama, plus 34 years in teaching, ensures that from the first meeting to finalising imaginative ceremonies, children, vulnerable adults and even animals are sensitively included, where required. Ceremonies should be full of laughter, love, and special personal touches. As a published author and experienced national speaker, the celebrant shares content with clients over several drafts whilst the quality of delivery is assured. Local wedding fairs have enabled conversations with engaged couples, clarifying what celebrant-led ceremonies can offer and meeting some incredible local suppliers. New venues for styled photoshoots have provided wonderful opportunities to learn from other professional skill sets the supplier otherwise wouldn’t necessarily meet at wedding ceremonies. The final highlight from April 2024 is an agreement with Isabel Hospice in Welwyn Garden City for Debra to offer free vow renewals or commitment ceremonies (as neither are legally binding) but also following the statutory paperwork being completed, free weddings or civil partnerships for those receiving palliative care. For an organisation which provided dignity, care and pain management for her mum, Debra felt fitting to create positive milestones at what is often the darkest of times for families. This is alongside the incredible support offered by the chaplain and counsellors. THE SALISBURY ARMS HOTEL For more than 650 years, The Salisbury Arms Hotel has been the ‘crown of the town’ in Hertford. The Grade II listed building was formerly known as The Bell, and guests can see a plaque commemorating this. Beautiful barns We’ve gathered beautiful venues perfect for rustic weddings EDWORTH MANOR 07791 300 194 | www.edworthmanor.com Just one mile south of Biggleswade, Edworth Manor is a working farm that one family has run for more than 200 years. Nearlyweds can expect personal service and practical experience from the team, who will help guide pairs through the planning process. Guests get a glimpse of farm life as they travel up the drive past grass meadows and tractors before reaching the venue. Couples often comment on how peaceful and tucked away the setting is. The meadow offers a perfect space for photos with a rural backdrop; couples are often snapped underneath the trees or in front of the traditional timber-clad barns. The venue doesn’t have a ceremony license, but the 12th-century church is available for blessings with permission of the Churches Conservation Trust. Celebrant-led ceremonies occur in the 18th-century barn at Edworth Manor, a genuinely rustic space that’s one of the largest in the area with plenty of historic character. Guests are taken back by the oak timbers and attractive alcoves, which offer a fantastic canvas for couples to personalise as little or as much as they like. The barn is only available for a limited number of occasions during the summer months each year. Available for exclusive use only and on a dry-hire basis, lovebirds are given access well ahead of the day to style the space as they wish. The recently restored The Old Granary is connected to the main barn, perfect for private dining receptions for up to 25 people. The Old Granary is available for booking all year round and can also be used for celebrant-led ceremonies with 40 loved ones or as a place for bridal parties to get ready. Both barns are served by a connected area for use by the external caterer. Double doors open out of the timber-clad barn onto a mown grass meadow, which couples can style for welcome drinks, garden games and outdoor catering. www.kathill.co.uk www.kathill.co.uk www.kathill.co.uk 23 BARN VENUES

RUSTIC ROMANCE Tom and Kim had a showstopping wedding with personal touches Images courtesy of Caroline Acaster Photography These lovebirds had known each other for a while but started dating after a night out. Fast forward time, Tom popped the question on a quiet beach in Norfolk, and their new chapter began. After setting the date in September 2023, the couple started planning their wedding. Here, the bride shares details about their special day… REAL WEDDINGS 27

The bridesmaids wore rustic jumpsuits in mocha. Our ceremony venue was at The Gatehouse, followed by a wedding breakfast at Kite at The Red Hart and our evening reception at The Lytton Arms in Old Knebworth. Our goal was to create a unique day while sticking to our budget to save money. We didn’t want to wait years saving up. 28

Everyone made our day extra special, but a shout out to our photographer who captured our special day. Our honeymoon was in Santorini for four nights, which was stunning! Tom booked this, and we had a private pool and hot tub. Just spending time with my husband was so special. REAL WEDDINGS 29

My nan sadly passed away earlier that year, but my mum found the perfect piece of her lace to finish the look, which was extra special. In the evening, we had a surprise magician who was a real hit with everyone – especially the kids. The best-man speeches were just amazing! I’ve never laughed so much. No one in Tom’s family is too serious, and they definitely didn’t disappoint. 30

32 EFFORTLESSLY ELEGANT Hannah and Mat’s rustic wedding at The Farmhouse at Redcoats was one to remember Images courtesy of Fairytale Wedding Photos

REAL WEDDINGS 33 This couple's love story began in 2010 on Hannah’s 21st birthday! She says, “I invited my work friend out for drinks to celebrate who already had plans for another birthday, but it turned out we were going to the same place. Mat happened to be a mutual friend who tried to impress me by ordering a big round of drinks, but his card was declined! The bar could only swipe cards, and his magnetic strip no longer worked as it was always next to his phone. This is before contactless; I’m feeling old! His mate had to pay for him, but I don’t remember that with it being my 21st. However, this wasn’t the first time we had met. We met at another mutual friend’s birthday, but I was seeing someone else at the time. I even had a photo of us both that we didn’t realise.” Mat proposed on the couple’s 10th anniversary. They went away to the Cotswolds and stayed in a lovely hotel with beautiful grounds. Hannah comments, “We decided to go for a walk, and I was wandering ahead, looking at lovely locations on the grounds. Mat left his bag open while unpacking and thought I had seen the ring box in his bag - I hadn’t – and he thought I was leading him to different spots where he could pop the question, but I was just being nosey and wandering around. In the rose garden, he knelt to ask, ‘Shall we make it forever?’ and I couldn't believe it!" SETTING THE SCENE The couple aimed to create a wedding that represented them both while being fun and involving loved ones. As they got engaged between Covid-19 lockdowns, they didn’t want to plan and then reorganise the wedding like so many had to do with restrictions. So they waited more than a year to make official plans and book the venue and suppliers. Hannah had spent a year researching everything wedding online. She had waited ten years for a proposal; what was one more year? The Farmhouse at Redcoats is a family-owned hotel with a 15thcentury farmhouse full of quirky details, historical features and warm hospitality for memorable stays. It’s no wonder the couple both fell in love with the setting! Hannah says, “We both wanted a barn and had looked around a few venues. I knew it was the perfect setting when Mat saw the wooden antler chandeliers and said, ‘I can get married in a Viking hall’. The venue complemented our styles, and the staff were amazing from the very first interaction.” The white and blue flowers, especially the flower arch, were beautiful on the day. The bride worried it might be too much, but the blooms turned out beautiful throughout the day! The lovebirds opted for a unique table arrangement, choosing nine round tables for a more friendly aspect, each named after a different type of fish Mat has caught as a keen fisher. The centrepieces were equally unique, with wooden bases adorned with small floral details and floating tealight candles. Wooden place names helped guests find seats, where a box of chocolate favours awaited. The pair had a three-tiered cake with white chocolate and raspberry sponge with jam and white chocolate buttercream and a red velvet sponge tier with white chocolate buttercream. It was delicious, and there wasn’t a piece left." LOOKING THE PART The bride wore a Justin Alexander dress in style 8799. While looking online, she had seen the gown and tried it on as a wildcard.
