CONGRATULATIONS Paxton & Whitfield, the UK’s oldest cheesemonger with a store in Bourton on the Water is celebrating its 225th birthday this year and needs help from its customers! The company’s archives were destroyed in a fire at its Jermyn Street-based shop after World War II and its records were lost forever. This year the Paxton & Whitfield team is embarking on a project to piece together the cheesemonger’s heritage to mark this milestone birthday. The company is inviting customers with a memory, story, or photo from recent or past times to email history@paxtonandwhitfield.co.uk. For every story it publishes, it will plant a tree as part of The Queen’s Green Canopy project (https://queensgreencanopy.org). This is a unique tree-planting initiative created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee this year which invites people from across the United Kingdom to plant a tree for the jubilee. James Rutter, managing director of Paxton & Whitfield, says, “We’re looking forward to hearing the memories and stories that our customers would like to share with us. From a small cheese stall in Aldwych, London to our internationally renowned business today, Paxton & Whitfield has always championed the best in artisanal British and Continental European cheeses. We’ve been through two World Wars and have successfully adapted to countless changes in cheese and retail trends in more than two centuries of trading; including most recently the Covid-19 pandemic.” James continues, “We pride ourselves on the quality of the cheeses and fine foods that we retail, our customer service and the exceptional experience that we offer. As we go forward into this year of celebration for the company, we will be hosting unique anniversary experiences and launching some exclusive new collections, to commemorate this remarkable achievement.” To find out more, visit www.paxtonandwhitfield.co.uk EDITOR LOVES It’s safe to say that our wonderful wedding industry looks set to thrive again this year and the new wedding collection from Paperchase will allow couples the opportunity to save a few pennies while not scrimping on quality. A newly launched wedding and events venue in the heart of historic Salisbury. The Wardrobe is a secret hideaway located to the rear of the Rifleman’s Museum. It is situated in the tranquil setting of the cathedral close and the wonderful garden leads down to the banks of the river Avon. With the rolling countryside beyond, it is difficult to imagine a better location within the Salisbury city limits for any outdoor event, be it a wedding reception, celebration or garden party. The walled garden is totally enclosed and private covering over half an acre. It also has numerous specimen trees including one of the finest copper beach trees in Wiltshire. The walled garden can be privately hired for your wedding, party or event. A marquee will be positioned in the beautiful garden (your choice of style) and we can accommodate up to 150 guests. For smaller numbers a reduced sized marquee is available. The on-site caterer is the award-winning Vanilla Catering & Events. Vanilla’s key ethics are attention to customer service and the use of top quality local ingredients. These result in bright, modern food styles presented with attention to detail in an unfussy yet friendly manner. A bespoke menu is created for each client and a complimentary wedding planner is provided to run your special day. An interesting fact: did you knowwhy we are we called TheWardrobe? The original building on the site was constructed in 1254. It was rebuilt in the 15th century and was used to store the robes of the Bishop of Salisbury; hence it was known as the “Bishop’s Wardrobe” or “The Wardrobe”! Whether you’re looking for a place to wed or somewhere to minimoon, you’re in for a treat at Tewkesbury Park. As I wound my way up the long driveway to the hotel I already felt a sense of getting away from it all, and from its hilltop position among 165 acres of grounds the views are quite something to behold. COMFY AND COZY Impressed by the combination of stylish modern interior design and ample nods to the town’s heritage, I was welcomed to the Duke of Somerset suite where I’d spend the night. Settling down to enjoy a complimentary fruit plate I instantly made myself at home. Ninety-three comfortable rooms and suites are available to you and your guests once wedding celebrations draw to a close and are sure to see you all get a good night’s sleep. I’d highly recommend securing one of the Historic Suites for your wedding night or honeymoon. Complete with waterfall shower, roll-top bath and Hynos bed, they’ll ensure your stay is luxurious. What’s more they’re ideal spaces for your wedding morning preparations, offering plenty of space for you and your bride tribe to get ready in style, as well as a stylish backdrop for photographs. It’s also well worth checking out the incredible spa, which is partnered with the Natural Spa Factory of Bath and offers a range of treatments and packages. As well as indoor pool and steam room, there’s also an outdoor hot tub and barrel sauna, just perfect for some much needed relaxation at the end of a long day. DINING DELIGHTS The hotel’s main restaurant Mint offers an informal dining experience and a menu bursting with fresh, seasonal flavours produced using the finest local produce. I dined on a starter of chicken and spinach roulade with chorizo crumb, pea shoot salad and sweetcorn puree. This was followed by a main course of venison with a smoked pancetta cassoulet, butterroasted squash, picked fennel, rainbow chard and a dark chocolate jus, which was every bit as opulent as it sounds. I finished my meal with a chocolate fondant, coffee ice cream, cocoa nut tuille, caramelised banana and cocoa bean foam. So, you can get a feel for the sort of quality fare you’ll be served on your wedding day, whether you’re looking for a traditional wedding breakfast or prefer the idea of a tasting menu. But you don’t need to take my word for it as the venue will invite you to a tasting experience with the head chef and his team, allowing you to create a menu to suit. I finished off the evening with cocktails in the modern and super-stylish lounge bar in front of the open fire. The Espresso Martini and After Eight were quite a treat! WHERE TO WED You’re spoiled for choice when it comes to ceremony spot, not least because the historical Tewkesbury Abbey is just a hop, skip and a jump down the road. Alternatively, you can choose to celebrate your entire day on site at the hotel. The Duke of Gloucester sits in the heart of the original 18th-century manor house and boasts an impressive bay window and crystal chandeliers. It can host up to 30 loved ones for intimate “I dos.” For a larger guest list of up to 150, the Cotswold Suite is the place to be. It can be divided if your numbers are somewhere in between though. The Cotswold Suite is also available for your reception allowing you to enjoy a drinks reception with canapés on the wraparound terrace and take advantage of the Berkeley Bar too. The space can accommodate 150 of your nearest and dearest, with plenty of room for a dancefloor. With a vast array of dining options for your evening guests you’ll be able to make sure that everyone is adequately spoiled. How about a Cotswolds picnic with homemade scotch eggs, quiches, scones and clotted cream; pizzas all round cooked in an outdoor wood-fire oven; or delicious barbecue fare, plus toffee apples and candyfloss? Following on from this success, Sam and Toby opened at Todenham Manor Farm near Moreton-in-Marsh in 2021 and again, this site was very well supported. The re-opened site at Todenham Manor Farm near Moretonin-Marsh from April 2022 offers pre-set menus for lunch and dinner served from Wednesday to Saturday until 24th September 2022. The fine-dining experience within nine bespoke, sustainably built, reconditioned glasshouses positioned to make the most of the incredible rural views are designed to blend seamlessly into the surrounding landscape. Each glasshouse can seat two, four, six or eight diners. The transparency of each one means guests remain intrinsic to The Scenic Supper’s fun, relaxed, outdoor dining experience whilst enjoying the novel opportunity of their own intimate, private dining space. Each glasshouse is individually made from reinforced glass with charred timber finishes inspired by the ancient Japanese art of Shou Sugi Ban, to protect them from the elements without the need for harsh chemicals or paint and help them blend seamlessly into the landscape. They’re weatherproof but are located in an open field so diners are encouraged to dress appropriately for the conditions and blankets are offered to guests on cooler evenings. All dishes on the pre-set, seasonally changing four-course lunch and four or six-course dinner menus are prepared fresh each day from the on-site kitchen housed within a converted shipping container. Highlights include award-winning, grass-fed rare breeds of beef and pork from Todenham Manor Farm’s herds, along with locally sourced poultry, lamb and game. Other outstanding and locally sourced fresh produce include bread by Mark’s Cotswold Bakery and ingredients from Drinkwaters Fruit and Veg and King Stone Dairy. There’ll also be homemade bread served at each sitting along with homemade chutneys, ice creams and sorbets. The Todenham Manor Farm site also features Scenic Supper founder Sam Lawson-King’s al fresco gin cocktail bar, creating delicious seasonal, cocktails made using his award-winning, artisan King Stone gin, homemade shrubs, cordials and mixers. Also available are Cotswolds sparkling wines, a small, well-curated wine list of Old and New World varieties (from £6.90 a glass and also available by the bottle) plus Cotswold Brew Company beers and Spinners Cider. The pre-set menus at Todenham Manor Farm offers a four-course lunch menu costing £55 per person, a four-course dinner for £55 per person or a six-course dinner menu for £65 per person (payable in advance). An optional cheeseboard costs an extra £10 per person and the pre-set menus ensure there’s very little food waste. Toby says, “Building on our success since launching in 2020, we’re excited about the Scenic Supper experience at Todenham Manor Farm. Diners tell us they still love the novelty of having their own intimate, dining space whilst enjoying incredible views and the outdoor restaurant setting and Todenham Manor Farm will continue to offer a very special place to drink and dine whilst looking out over some truly remarkable views within a working farm setting.” Contact: www.thescenicsupperevents.co.uk What ’s new?
