Many couples booking a spring wedding will be hopeful for good weather. A time associated with sunshine, blooming flowers, and blue skies. But alas, we do live in Great Britain after all. My spring wedding was as grey as it gets with rain to go with it, while my sister’s spring wedding was a heatwave – she didn’t think those fur boleros through for the bridesmaids I tell you! It goes to show, you really can’t predict the weather, but you can plan for it. When scouring the region for your big-day venue, yes you may have dreams for an al fresco wedding, guests sitting outside, a green grass aisle as you walk to your betrothed, but Wedding Planning 101 advises to always have a contingency plan. A question for any potential venue you set your heart on. This issue, we showcase some stellar venues in Coastal Venues on page 19 and North Cambridge Venues on page 23, and we also have lots more Q&As from our experts over in Hot Topic and Fashion and Beauty Q&A. NEWS Nearlywed All the latest from around the county STEP INTO THE GARDEN OF WELLNESS Set to launch this spring, Riverhills Healthy Club and Day Spa in Ipswich announce an exciting collaboration with renowned gardener and presenter, Ade Sellars. His mission has been to redesign the stunning spa gardens ahead of its highly anticipated relaunch. Known as ‘The Good Life Gardener’, Ade brings an innovative and holistic approach to the garden’s redesign. He has seamlessly blended luxury with nature to create the perfect wellness retreat. As an award-winning gardening expert, with a wealth of experience from RHS events and national publications, Ade is bringing his signature creativity to this project, central to Riverhills’ mission of redefining wellness. Ade states, “It’s incredibly exciting to be part of such an extensive project. Riverhills’ owner, Dave Courteen, has given me the creative freedom to come up with something truly unique that will reflect both the ethos of Riverhills and the beautiful surroundings it’s set in. ”Plants, wildlife and being outside have great positive health benefits for the mind, body, and soul, so it makes sense that the club should embark on such a ‘wellbeing’ project.” The garden will be an extension of the spa itself, inviting guests to immerse themselves in the restorative power of nature; it will have fragrant and colourful planting schemes, immersive pathways, and serene seating areas to promote mindfulness and rejuvenation. This project is part of a broader redevelopment of Riverhills, which includes state-of-the-art spa facilities such as a Snowsky Snow Shower, stunning vitality pool, aroma steam room and Volcano sauna. Now, the Dragon Hall team are delighted to invite couples to celebrate their marriage within the historic walls of its majestic Great Hall. The Great Hall is the heart of Dragon Hall, a rare example of a Medieval trading complex, built in 1427 by merchant, Robert Toppes. In the Great Hall, you get the perfect marriage of beauty and history; constructed with English oak from some 1,000 trees, with seven bays that were originally decorated with colourful carvings – of which only the eponymous dragon remains – it provides a sumptuous backdrop for ceremonies and wedding breakfasts. Celebrations continue in the contemporary Foyle Gallery, a bright glass gallery overlooking the Medieval courtyard garden, with an impressive brick arch as its backdrop. It is a versatile space, perfect for reception drinks and dancing. Dragon Hall is available for a limited number of dates throughout the year, and offers a generous fixed-rate wedding package, giving couples exclusive-use of the venue over three days to ensure everything is as stressfree, and as perfect as possible. Once a site for displaying and selling Norfolk goods and imports from Europe, Dragon Hall is now home to the National Centre of Writing and trades in stories. All funds raised through weddings at Dragon Hall go to support the organisation’s charitable work and the upkeep of Dragon Hall. Visit www.nationalcentreforwriting.org.uk/hire for more information. ISAACS ON THE QUAY 01473 284 000 | www.isaacsweddings.co.uk Set on the Ipswich waterfront, Isaacs On The Quay is a local landmark that’s full of character and charm. Once a wool merchant’s home and workplace, the Grade I and Grade II* listed building boasts a rich history spanning centuries and has been lovingly restored to provide a charming setting for weddings. Some of the oldest parts are thought to date back to between 1430 and 1550, and there are original features throughout, including exposed beams and vaulted ceilings, with exhibits from the building’s industrious past on display. Formally known as the Sale Room, stone steps lead into the timberframed ceremony room. Once used for storing wool cloth for export, it’s now a magical place to tie the knot and celebrate afterwards. THE MALTINGS 01353 662 633 | www.themaltingsely.org.uk The Maltings was built in 1868 as part of Ebenezer William Harlock’s brewery complex on Ely’s Waterside, where locally grown barley was processed into malt for brewing. The hall was originally on three separate floors, where barley was added to water and then stored on the first and second floors before being passed to the drying kiln, which is now home to a stage. The building passed through various ownerships, and in 1971, the building was made available to the ‘City of Ely Urban District Council’ for a minimal cost, who converted it into a public hall. The restaurant area was separated from the rest of the building and is now home to Ta Bouche. The Maltings building itself soon returned to operation as the venue you see today and continues to grow its activities. As well as being ideal for wedding receptions, The Maltings is also licensed to host your ceremony in its beautiful riverside setting. The team endeavours to create bespoke packages to suit your individual requirements and budget; whether you would prefer an intimate gathering, an informal party, or a traditional wedding breakfast, they are happy to assist you throughout the whole experience to ensure your special day is memorable and stress-free. Game, set and match Becky and John’s wedding had a wildflower-theme complemented by a sage-green colour scheme Images courtesy of Claire Belson Photography 28
Becky and John met while working at the same school, John being a tennis coach and Becky taking students to the courts for tennis lessons; these courtside meetings led them to talking at the staff barbecue one summer. Fast-forward to the proposal, John proposed on Christmas Eve 2022 at home. “It was a complete surprise,” shares Becky. “It included our daughter who wore a t-shirt saying ‘Will you marry my daddy?’, however Aviana had other ideas! She decided she didn’t want to take part in the proposal and had a paddy about wearing the t-shirt. John proposed later in the evening, after I’d had a shower and was only wearing a dressing gown!” The big date was set, 6th July, 2024, with St. Mary of the Assumption Church, Ufford, Woodbridge and Hungarian Hall Estate, setting the scene. Here we find out more about their day… SETTING THE SCENE Both of the chosen big-day venues had family links to the couple; the church is in a small village where Becky grew up and was close to her family, her grandad even took the ceremony and married her and John; while Hungarian Hall is a family run business, owned by Becky’s auntie and uncle. Becky used to help out and work there in the summer when she was growing up. The marquee is situated on stunning grounds in an area of beautiful wildflowers, and the venue gives so much freedom with decorations and any extra finishing touches. For the finer details on the day, the pair opted for personalised shortbread biscuits for favours, with the bride and groom’s initials and wedding date imprinted on the icing; the centrepieces were wildflowers with lots of candles in a mixture of sizes and colours, with a sage-green runner through the middle. Additional flowers included Becky’s stunning bouquet, the bridesmaids’ and the groomsmen’s buttonholes, which were all combinations of pink and green wildflowers. Becky and her maid-of-honour, Natalie, made lots of little flower displays along with a flower wall, and the place names/table names were created with the help of mum Elaine and niece Mia. For the big-day bake, Regency Cakes in Newmarket made the two-tier design which was white chocolate and raspberry and lemon flavoured, with a simple pearl design. The rest of the cusine was a tapas-style offering of cold meats, pickles, breads, cheese etc to start, followed by chicken in a creamy sauce, teriyaki beef, mushroom risotto, with chips, salad and vegetables on the side, followed by chocolate brownie for pudding, and Dave Harris provided an evening hog roast. If that wasn’t enough to satisfy guests, there was also an ice cream bike with a large selection to choose from, from Simply Sweet Candy Co. LOOKING THE PART For her bridal look, Becky wore a Martina Liana 1560 gown, accessorised with simple pearl drop earrings and necklace with a fine gold chain, and a gold bracelet which were all gifts from John. The groom and the groomsmen looked dapper in green tweed suits, with beige/stone coloured waistcoats. The bridesmaids coordinated with the colour scheme in sagegreen wrap dresses, while the flowergirls had white dresses with large bows on the back to match the bride’s dress. REAL WEDDINGS 29

TIME TO CELEBRATE “A friend of ours sung whilst guests were arriving at the church, she did an incredible job and kept guests entertained as I was late!” shares Becky, “Adam Thomas, also a singer, sang as we ate our meal, and he was incredible! We have had so many people ask for his contact details since our wedding I cannot recommend him enough.” To utilise the outdoor space, Mersey Entertainment provided crazy golf a fun activity enjoyed by all! “They even put up mini marquees to cover us from the rain!” adds Becky. “In the evening, Stallion and the Bear, a three-piece band, performed our first dance and into the early hours of the morning.” MEMORABLE MOMENTS It’s hard to pick just one standout out moment, but reflecting on the day Becky said, “We were completely in awe of each other and overwhelmed by how everything came together on the day and looked so beautiful.” John said his standout moment was when Becky walked down the aisle! What’s more, England were in the quarter final of the Euros in the middle of the speeches, Becky was not looking forward to this and was worried it would spoil the meal, however it was made into a bit of a giggle within the speeches which everyone loved. 31 REAL WEDDINGS
