HOT TOPIC Our experts solve your problems WEDDING WORRIES BY THE SEASIDE What would you suggest for a summer-themed wedding cake? When putting together a design for your cake, think about your favourite memories together and incorporate them to add some personality to your big-day bake. For example, if you’re opting for a seaside theme, a cake like the one pictured would be perfect. This lemon cake was decorated with barnacle meringues, buttercream baby barnacles with lots of coastal flora and foliage and seagrasses with a red kelp dressing under the stand. Being an environmentally friendly florist, I use British, local, and in-season flowers as they have a natural appearance and hold themselves in a much better way than imported flowers, which come with a huge carbon footprint. Using locally grown flowers gives couples a pretty meadow look on their wedding day rather than the harsh appearance of imported cut flowers. Foraged foliage gives a florist a variety of different things to use meaning the arrangements will be very different to another florist using wholesale flowers. Consider a florist who uses recycled/multiple-use plastics and natural materials that help our planet and the wildlife around us. Cheryl Slater www.cherylsflowers.co.uk FOOD FOR THOUGHT My hubby-to-be and I are having an outdoor, festival-themed wedding; what food would you suggest? Go for a meat or veggie-sharing platter with extra sides to create a festival feel. We have done many of these at festival-style weddings; they are super easy to eat, and everyone gets to enjoy a little bit of everything rather than a set meal. Sharing food makes for great conversation and brings people together who may not have met each other before.
