Your Devon and Cornwall Wedding - March/April 2025 (Issue 54)

Emily and James begun their relationship at work. “Even though we were in different departments, we got chatting one day and realised we both grew up close by to each other and had plenty in common,” Emily tells us. James proposed at The Newt in Somerset. “It’s one of our favourite places and he asked me to marry him under a waterfall, down on one knee in the rain!” Emily says. “It was a magical moment I’ll never forget. SETTING THE SCENE “We held our wedding at my grandparent’s house where they have lived for the past 59 years,” Emily tells us. “It’s a beautiful Grade II listed thatched Devon property in Clyst Hydon. My parents got married there 33 years ago (to the day on Saturday 7th September 1991), so it’s a very special place for our family.” “We planned for our ceremony to be in the garden, underneath the tree that my grandfather planted on my parent’s wedding day,” Emily explains. “However, the weather didn’t cooperate. It started to rain so we needed a last-minute plan. We ended up having the ceremony inside the marquee, but the challenge was how I would get from the house to the marquee without getting wet! My bridesmaids, relatives and some of the catering staff made a giant umbrella shield to protect me. I was crying and laughing at the same time but the photos of this are “So many generations of family came together on the day and it told the story of our lives. To see all our family and friends get on so well together, and to enjoy such an epic party together, was the highlight of the day. The ceremony was also incredibly emotional and special, we were all in tears!” - Emily and James “My parents, Jane and Jonathan helped to plan and organise everything and everyone!” - Emily 37 REAL WEDDINGS
