The latest version of The Good Hotel Guide: Great Britain & Ireland is now live online, featuring more than 700 hotels, including 76 new entries. Now in its 48th year, The Good Hotel Guide is the only truly independent hotel guide in the United Kingdom as it does not accept payment for inclusion or free hospitality in return for coverage. This year, they include three properties in Devon: Best Foodie – The Collective at Woolsery – Bideford, North Devon Located in the village of Woolsery, The Collective comprises the Farmers Arms dining pub, a gourmet fish and chip shop, and a 150-acre farm providing some of the produce for the above. Plus, there’s also a corner shop and post office with a contemporary twist. Best Romantic Hotel – Hotel Endsleigh, Tavistock, West Devon Originally created by Georgiana, Duchess of Bedford as a summer home, this property boasts sumptuous rooms and suites. Located in the Tamar Valley, it’s surrounded by vast swathes of forestry, caves and waterfalls. Best for Dogs – Mill End Hotel, Newton Abbot, South Devon This Dartmoor hotel prides itself on welcoming dogs with guests. As well as a step forward in terms of waste reduction, this initiative offers customers economic savings of £6 per 70cl when choosing from the British brand’s core range of small-batch spirits. Founder David McWilliam says, “I have wanted to improve our environmental interaction for a while. It’s not enough just to enjoy the beauty of the place, we have to look after it too. Running a distillery is all about heating, cooling, glass and water and so adds to our footprint and we are constantly mindful of how we must become lighter on the environment. In keeping with our ethos of celebrating the natural beauty of our region and in step with our core value always to do better we need to take positive action to reduce our impact. Our new pouches enable a nationwide refill service which begins that gradual journey to better.” David adds, “Whilst we have refilled our glass bottles in our bar and for people visiting in-store, we can now offer our customers beyond Cornwall the refill service and encourage more reuse of our distinct glass bottles. The move benefits us all and reduces our impact on the environment and costs that we can pass on to our customers.” He adds, “We’re a young Cornish distillery, distilling small batch sizes of just 60 bottles. This enables consistency and quality at every step. By offering a more affordable refillable option, we hope to make it easier for consumers to shop locally, reduce their impact and prioritise provenance.” Spirits available for refill are Padstow Gin St George’s Well, Padstow Rose Gin Hawker’s Cove, and the gold-winning Padstow Vodka Gun Point. All the distillery’s spirits are crafted using local ingredients sourced near the distillery in Padstow, with barley farmed and botanicals foraged just a mile away from their premises. After careful research, David and his design team selected these durable PVC pouches which feature Padstow Distilling’s distinctive turquoise band, inspired by the Camel Estuary which is a theme embraced by David McWilliam when launching his inaugural Padstow Gin, St George’s Well, in 2020. David says, “Consumers are increasingly interested in quality and knowing where their ingredients come from. We take pride in producing our spirit from barley grown right here in Padstow, and we forage for Alexanders, one of the key ingredients in our gin, and for sloe berries for our seasonal flavours.” https://padstowdistilling.co.uk 9 LOCAL NEWS

After the delight of the first win in 2023, the café has worked hard throughout 2024 and through its customer service, value for money and heritage menu has again been selected for the award. “We celebrate top-notch food, service, and value, basing our awards on what matters most: customer opinion. By using customer feedback, online reviews, nominations and votes, we ensure our awards reflect genuine dining experiences. Many awardees continue to shine by maintaining the high standards that first earned them recognition.” says the Good Food Awards. This was very much the case with The Garden Café in winning for a second year. The establishment also won Newquay in Bloom for Best Café and is also up for Best Café in The Cornwall Tourism Awards. VALLEYSIDE ESCAPES WINS AGAIN AT THE DEVON TOURISM AWARDS Valleyside Escapes recently won silver for Glamping Business of the Year at the Devon Tourism Awards (2024/25). It’s Valleyside Escape’s fifth Devon Tourism award in the past six years having collected gold in the same category in 2023, highly commended in 2021 and 2022, and a bronze award in the new business category in 2019. It is their 10th award in total since opening six years ago. Emma Wright, co-owner, said, “To be honoured as one of the top glamping sites in Devon again is an incredible achievement. We have put our heart and soul into creating Valleyside Escapes and have enhanced and improved our services each year to give guests the best glamping experience. Our location, with stunning valley views, is the perfect spot to create lots of amazing holiday memories. It is a rigorous process to enter these awards and we are so happy and proud to achieve this accolade which is also recognition of our team’s hard work and dedication.” This is the second trophy in two weeks because sister business, Valleyside Barn, a wedding and events venue collected a highly commended award at the South West Wedding Awards in the Country/Barn venue category in November. Matthew Wright, co-owner, said, “To receive two awards across different industries in the same month is a real achievement. We set ourselves extremely high standards for service for both glamping guests and couples getting married with us and both these awards are testament to that.” The South West Wedding Awards recognise businesses which exceed expectations, provide outstanding service and inspire their clients to want to actively and positively promote them. Couples who have used a specific wedding service vote online and provide feedback on why they think the business should be considered. This is then reviewed by an expert panel of judges who then award the winners, and in some categories include a highly commended when the judge’s scoring is extremely close. For the Devon Tourism Awards, applicants are required to complete an extensive questionnaire backed with evidence. If stage 1 is passed they then receive a visit from a judge to capture first-hand experience. Following the visit, the judge then decides if the applicant progresses to the final stage where gold, silver, bronze, or commended is awarded. Awards organiser Robin Barker of Services for Tourism commented, “In what is a difficult time for many, it has been great to see increased entries into the awards and an increased number of winners. Their innovation, resilience and commitment to excellence never cease to amaze me.” Valleyside Escapes opened on the 3rd of August 2018 and has three large, six-berth safari tents overlooking the picturesque Exe Valley. It has a private stretch of the River Exe where glampers can go wild swimming, fishing, kayaking or simply enjoy a picnic. There are also additional facilities including a courtyard bar, games room, a bespoke mud kitchen in the children’s play area, boules court and an honesty shop stocking local produce. Valleyside Barn opened in September 2021 and has hosted over 40 weddings and events. Carrie Thomas, Visitor Information Officer, Tiverton Tourist Information Service said, “Huge congratulations to Valleyside Barn & Escapes. The availability of a multi-award-winning, luxury glamping site with a successful wedding and events venue is an excellent asset to Mid-Devon and supports our current work to promote all that is great about this area through Visit Mid Devon.” https://valleysideescapes.co.uk www.instagram.com/valleyside_escapes_glamping www.facebook.com/valleysideescapes DAY Check out these dreamy wedding venues What’s new? THE BEDFORD HOTEL, TAVISTOCK, DEVON The Bedford Hotel’s stunning imposing façade reflects the style and grandeur of a place which has been at the centre of life in Tavistock for more than a century. The parish church of St Eustatius is just across the road, as is the bustling square and Pannier Market which mark the heart of this historic market town. The pretty front garden is a delight at any time of year, particularly during the spring and summer months when it shows off the skills of the hotel’s gardeners. One of the hotel’s best-kept secrets is its ancient walled garden (often referred to as The Secret Garden) which has a manicured lawn, formal borders and a herb garden used by the hotel’s chefs. THE TARTAN FOX IN CORNWALL WAS ADDED TO THE MICHELIN GUIDE FIVE MONTHS AFTER OPENING The Michelin Guide has recently announced the addition of The Tartan Fox, chef Adam Handling MBE’s Cornish pub, to the Michelin Guide Great Britain & Ireland. The Tartan Fox is Adam’s latest opening in Cornwall, following its launch in June this year. The Tartan Fox, located in the idyllic countryside between Newquay and Truro, is Adam’s second venture in Cornwall, joining his restaurant and bar Ugly Butterfly in nearby St. Ives (also featured in the Michelin Guide). The Tartan Fox marks Adam’s second pub opening, following the launch of award-winning The Loch & the Tyne in Old Windsor in 2021, which was awarded a Michelin Bib Gourmand earlier this year. Adam Handling MBE says: “I’m super honoured that The Tartan Fox has been included in the Michelin Guide, especially having only been open for just under five months. Even more so, I’m proud that it’s somewhere in Cornwall. It’s the most incredible place, there are so many amazing restaurants and venues in Cornwall and I’m very proud to be a part of it.” Located in a 400-year-old Grade II listed building that sits on 30 acres of land, The Tartan Fox embodies Adam’s approach to zero-waste, modern British food, underpinned by the philosophy of ‘Sustainable, local luxury’. All produce used at the pub is locally sourced from in and around Cornwall and the mouth-watering menu features elevated versions of much-loved pub classics, such as fish and chips served with mushy peas, curry and tartare sauce and smashed beef burger with Cornish gouda, truffle mayo and fries. It’s a great location to host a wedding. Smaller affairs can enjoy the semi-private dining areas. There are two different experiences to choose from, where couples tell the team their favourite dishes which are then created, or they can enjoy what’s on offer from the restaurant team. www.tartanfoxpub.co.uk www.instagram.com/tartanfoxpub What’s new? https://johnherseystudio.com/about FRIEDA AND THE MOON, NR LOOE This stunning venue is set within 13 acres. The wedding studio opens out on to three terraced circular lawns and gardens with stunning views stretching over the Cornish countryside. The paddock perched above houses the unique accommodations including The Tabernacle, an exquisite tiny home with a stained-glass Moon Window and The Observatory, clad in copper with a hand-crafted oak interior with a large sky window above the bed for stargazing. The wedding studio is a timber-framed sanctuary with a slate roof, Italianate ceiling, oak floors, wood-burning stove, and a stunning, stained-glass feature - The Ocean Window. It’s also home to the Stargazy Pie Café Horsebox, where champagne can be served after the ceremony. Most ceremonies take place here in the wedding studio which can hold up to 12 guests plus the happy couple, musicians, photographers and the registrars – plus an alpaca or owl as a ring-bearer! If the weather is good, couples can get married on the three lawns which represent the Celtic Triad from the Celtic wisdom tradition: tranquillity, wisdom, and kindness. Couples can also get married in the hornbeam circle, a magical candlelit grove in the nearby woods. These ceremonies are usually held at twilight and are for elopements or very small groups with the reception hosted inside the wedding studio. Receptions take place both in the wedding studio and out on the lawn, depending on the weather. After the reception, couples can move up to their accommodation and enjoy the hot tub, or sit around a fire under the stars. www.friedaandthemoon.co.uk www.instagram.com/friedaandmoon Paul Waterman https://johnherseystudio.com/about LOCAL VENUES 27
