All the latest from around both regions POB HOTELS WITH PROPERTIES IN DEVON AND CORNWALL ANNOUNCES BRAND AMBASSADOR The latest brand ambassador for PoB Hotels, the architect, designer and presenter George Clarke encourages guests to live an inspired life. Whether travellers are marvelling at nature’s beauty, carving out moments for wellness and tranquillity, embracing the simple pleasures of a delicious meal, or simply relishing the present moment, there’s no better place to do this than one of Britain’s most magical hotels with properties in Devon and Cornwall as well as nationwide. These include Boringdon Hall Hotel & Spa, The Headland Hotel & Spa, The Nare Hotel and Bovey Castle. PoB Hotels recently announced its latest brand ambassador: national treasure George Clarke. Through his ambassadorship with PoB Hotels, George will celebrate all things modern design and architecture. With this in mind, PoB Hotels is encouraging guests to find their inspiration and live their best life through their new campaign: An Inspired Life. Incorporating their distinguished collection of the finest independent hotels across the British Isles, PoB Hotels are creating experiences for guests designed by what inspires them most, via their recently launched PoB Breaks, and working with renowned ambassadors to tell their stories of inspiration. Of the partnership, George Clarke, PoB Hotels’ latest Ambassador, says: “When the PoB Hotels team approached me they had one question: what inspires you? While of course on the surface level, it is architecture and design that pique my interest, I was surprised by just how inspiring some of these historic hotels and their owners were. I’m thrilled to share my inspiration with other guests, and hopefully inspire them to appreciate those little design and architectural details during their stays.” https://pobhotels.com NEWS BOVEY CASTLE WINS PRESTIGIOUS AWARD A five-star boutique hotel in Devon has been named one of the best small hotels in the UK for the second time in a decade. The Eden Hotel Collection – which operates Bovey Castle in Dartmoor – has been named Small Hotel Group of the Year at the prestigious AA Hospitality Awards that highlight the very best in British hospitality, honouring achievements across fifteen categories, reflecting the industry’s commitment to innovation, quality and environmental responsibility. Eden was recognised for its consistency in quality and service delivery and for the excellent work around its employee experience, as well as its efforts in tackling sustainability. Eden’s award win follows a year that has seen the business invest more than £3 million in venue refurbishments and colleague welfare initiatives plus adopting sustainability projects around food production. Investment has also stretched to its 500-strong workforce, including the launch of an app-based employee recognition programme called The Happy Hub, which includes activities that help to promote positivity such as the ability to recognise a colleague with an e-card, an employee of the month, and monetary recognitions for long service. For guests, Eden is also starting its Inspired By programme which brings to life the story of each hotel’s character for visitors while at the same time focusing on growing its produce on-site and utilising local suppliers has also continued to develop. This complements the collection’s ability to recycle 100 per cent of its waste, with 30 per cent directly recycled, 50 per cent converted into renewable energy, and 20 per cent processed by anaerobic digestion. Dean Gunston, general manager at Bovey Castle, said: “It takes something special to be recognised in this way by the AA, and it comes just a few months after we clinched gold for Large Hotel of the Year in both the South West Tourism Excellence Awards and the Devon Tourism Awards.” Dean adds, “We are extremely proud of this award as there has been a monumental effort from people throughout our team to raise the bar regarding the visitor experience and further establish Bovey as a special place to visit.” Mark Chambers, managing director at The Eden Hotel Collection, said: “The AA Hospitality Awards are the holy grail for any hospitality business, so to be recognised as the best in our field for the second time in a decade is a testament to our people and the consistent delivery of excellence across all of our hotels.” Mark adds, “As a business, everything we do feeds into providing the highest possible quality of service – from investing in our facilities, through to helping our people to be the best versions of themselves in terms of their skillsets, but also supporting them with everyday life, too. Reputation and recommendations are key tools for success for any hospitality business, so this latest award win provides a fantastic launchpad for each of our five hotels to build on the great work they are already doing in their communities to attract guests from the local area and further afield.” Simon Numphud, managing director at AA Media, expressed his pride in the resilience and creativity shown by the UK’s hospitality sector in 2024, “This incredible celebration is a true testament to the strength and innovation within our industry. The dedication and excellence demonstrated by all the hospitality teams have been inspiring. Congratulations to all the winners, nominees, and new Rosette holders for their remarkable contributions.” www.edenhotelcollection.com Nearlywed 9 LOCAL NEWS

The new platform has been developed with a focus on enhancing customer experience and showcasing to consumers Devonia’s sustainable collect, wash, and reuse process, which ensures its bottles are refilled on average eight times. Some of the key features of the new website include highlighting the positive environmental impacts of Devonia’s reuse processes and a customer-first approach to business, plus offering an integrated order system that enables both new and existing customers to place orders efficiently. Director of Devonia Spring Water, Fiona Graham said: “We are extremely proud of the progress we have made this year as a small independent business. For us, 2024 was a time to reflect and ultimately, refresh the brand as a whole to ensure consumers have the opportunity to understand the concept behind our bottled water company.” Fiona continued: “I’m thrilled with the outcome of our new website, which we partnered with Plymouth-based creative agency Upshot to build. Working with Upshot has enabled us to expertly bring our brand to life through an interactive and dynamic website.” Plymouth-based brand agency, Upshot, was first commissioned to take on the rebrand project, which included brand strategy, a new visual identity and website. Upshot’s creative director, Owen Jones, added: “It’s been a huge privilege to work with Fiona and Neil on Devonia’s rebrand and website over the last year or so, and we’re proud to have played a part in helping their business grow. Their environmental impact is clear to see, but beyond that, they are a fantastic example of a small family business with strong values making a difference. The new website tells its story engagingly and naturally and provides a practical solution for customer ordering and reordering.” www.devoniawater.co.uk www.unsplash.com PADSTOW DISTILLING LAUNCHES BESPOKE WEDDING BATCHES Padstow Distilling, the Cornish distillery that secured four standout awards at this year’s IWSC awards, is now supplying bespoke batches of premium spirits to couples celebrating their weddings in the UK. The artisan drinks brand opened its new premises in the Cornish town of Padstow in April, where local founder and head distiller David McWilliam has been hand-crafting small batches of gin and vodka using ingredients from the shores of North Cornwall’s coast. Despite increased production capabilities in the new distillery, the batch size is kept small at 60 bottles, allowing David to oversee every element of distillation. Small trial or bespoke batches are perfect for wedding favours and similar celebrations. Couples can fuel their wedding with their own individualised batch, each one customised with their initials. They can choose from Padstow Distilling’s signature range or enjoy a special edition flavour. www.padstowdistilling.co.uk 10

Garden party Harriet and Tom’s marquee celebration was styled with a pretty pink and sage green theme Images courtesy of Mimosa Photography Harriet Kendall and Tom Watson married on Saturday the 8th of June 2024 at All Saints Church, Thurlestone followed by a reception at Bantham Bash Field, Thurlestone. 26

Harriet and Tom met on the dating app Bumble in 2017. “Our first date was at the Oyster Shed, a wine bar along the River Thames by London Bridge where we immediately hit it off and after hours of non-stop talking, we arranged our second date for just two days later,” Harriet tells us. “We had so much in common and we bonded over our love of travel, dogs and family.” The proposal was a magical one that came as a surprise to Harriet. “Having an eye for detail and being the most organised person, Tom knows I always thought I would predict when his proposal was coming but he caught me completely off guard,” she says. “We were on holiday in Majorca in July 2022 and had ventured off early one morning to explore one of the beautiful coves and capture some pictures before the beach became busy. Before taking a dip at Cala Pi beach, we walked around the top of the cliff to a viewpoint where all we could see was sparkling turquoise waters and a handful of boats. After taking some photographs, Tom got down on one knee and popped the question! We then wandered down to the cove to enjoy a swim and let it sink in before enjoying lunch at a picturesque seafood restaurant jutting out on a pier. During lunch, we received a phone call from a dog breeder that we had been “We both felt excited, nervous but calm at the same time being surrounded by our loved ones on our wedding morning.Tom even managed nine holes at Thurlestone Golf Club with friends and family members whilst I had a laidback morning getting ready with my sisters, mum and bridesmaids.” - Harriet “The first look as Harriet walked down the aisle in the church towards me and we locked eyes for the first time was such a memorable moment for me.” - Tom 27 REAL WEDDINGS

in touch with telling us they had a successful litter and there was a puppy with our name on it,” Harriet says. SETTING THE SCENE Since Harriet and Tom started dating, they have frequently visited the South Hams in Devon to spend time where Harriet grew up and where her family still live. “We have many happy memories in the village of Thurlestone where I used to live, from taking long dog walks to enjoying pub lunches and swimming in the sea,” Harriet tells us. “It was here that Tom enjoyed a game of golf and asked for my dad’s blessing. We always thought about how special it would be to get married in the village church and be able to host a reception that looks out across Burgh Island, so Bantham Bash ticked all of the boxes!” The couple decorated their marquee garden party with a pink and sage green colour theme. “We chose hanging décor because we wanted to give the effect of floating lampshades and ladders in the marquee,” Harriet says. “We sourced some of the rattan lampshades ourselves from a market during our holiday in Cambodia while the rest were pre-loved, and we also used old wooden ladders from Tom’s late grandad which we threaded with eucalyptus and foliage picked from the garden.” For their table decorations, the couple chose sage green twist candles paired with cut glass candlesticks to add a height. “We placed these between large vases of fresh flowers including pink peonies and roses,” Harriet says. “We used our stunning displays created by Thorn Flowers that included two floral urns made for the church and the hanging display again inside the marquee to decorate around the top table. We collected Salcombe Gin bottles and added fairylights to put on the tables as it got dark.” Harriet and Tom’s table plan, welcome signs, menus and order of service booklets included a personal touch. “I worked with Tom’s mum, who is an artist to design a custom peony floral template which we then used the original watercolour to blow up for printing for our stationery,” Harriet says. “We borrowed some large wooden easels “We both left the church on cloud nine and couldn’t stop beaming from ear to ear all day long. No words can describe the amount of love we felt having people from all over the world and all different parts of our lives there to celebrate with us.” - Harriet and Tom “My dad has a collection of old Land Rovers including an Austin Champ which, along with my sisters, I decorated with flowers and ribbons. Luckily on the day, the weather allowed us and the bridal party to travel through the village, from the church to the field where the marquee was which was a magical feeling!” - Harriet 28

to display the signs around the marquee. I made our place names with my mum and sisters. We created them using thick white cards and hand-tied sage green ribbon to complement the candles.” Harriet and Tom chose a nearly naked, two-tier cake featuring a simple floral design. “It was white chocolate and raspberry in flavour and we cut it with Tom’s dad’s sword which he had kept from his days in the Army,” Harriet says. “We chose a fresh, tasty summery menu for our special day. Jo from Oxbridge Catering designed a menu featuring homemade focaccia, dips, crudités followed by a selection of salads made from locally sourced ingredients and chicken breast with salsa verde, crispy rosemary salted potatoes and truffle mayo. It was perfect!” LOOKING THE PART Harriet wore the Lucy V2 gown by the Australian brand Made With Love. “I wasn’t sure what style I was going to pick but the first shop we booked an appointment with was MWL and as soon as I tried the Lucy style on, which was the second dress I tried, I knew it was the one,” she tells us. “I just felt completely comfortable, elegant and like myself wearing it. I have always loved accessories so to go for a simple dress meant I got the chance to personalise it. I added chiffon shoulder bows, pearl-drop jewellery and a long pearl veil.” Tom wore a custom three-piece pale linen suit teamed with brown suede loafers, pearl cufflinks and a sage green tie to match the bridesmaids’ dresses. “Our beautiful bridesmaids chose the same sage green satin dress with shoulder bows to complement my wedding dress,” Harriet explains. All the girls wore their own jewellery and a pair of gold heels while our four groomsmen wore matching two-piece linen suits with loafers and ties to match Tom.” TIME TO CELEBRATE The music was the highlight of the couple’s day for so many of their guests. “We knew we wanted a saxophonist to play tracks reminiscent of chilled Ibiza vibes during the canapé and drinks reception and whilst on the hunt for one, we came across the band All Things Nice Entertainment,” Harriet says. “After watching all of their videos online, we were sold and it was the best decision we could have made. During the evening, the sax came alive and, combined with singer Becky’s vocals plus the DJ and bongos, the dancefloor was packed from the first dance until the very end. It was so much fun, with friends and family combining to bring high energy all night long, even getting our dad’s up on people’s shoulders!” “During Tom’s speech, he announced that he had a special guest joining us and ran out through the side of the marquee leaving everyone wondering who was about to walk in. To everyone’s surprise, he returned carrying our gorgeous dog, Ruby! Ruby spent a couple of hours wandering around the marquee, soaking up the attention from our loved ones and being fed as much chicken under the table as possible!” - Harriet REAL WEDDINGS 29
