Anna tells us, “For couples wanting to be sustainable when it comes to picking their wedding flowers, I would encourage them to ask their chosen florist for what varieties are in season in the UK at the time of their wedding and not to be too set on exactly which flower types they want.” She adds, “With a colour palette selected, and direction on the type of aesthetic they want to achieve, they should let the florist have the freedom to choose the best blooms growing that week. That way, the flowers will have an amazing scent, and movement and most probably be unique to that wedding. They might even be blooms that guests may not have seen before which will make them even more memorable and beautiful and have a far lower carbon footprint than using imported flowers from the other side of the world. They will also be supporting a growing network of artisan growers in the UK by shopping local and supporting small businesses.” Anna also encourages couples to consider re-purposing flowers from their ceremony into their reception, such as moving floral pillars or meadow boxes, which can be budget-friendly and minimise waste. She tells us, “Think about what to do with your flowers after the wedding - can they be given to guests as posies, or donated to a local charity or composted? My top tip for couples? It’s vital to eliminate singleuse plastics and floral foam in wedding floristry as there are so many sustainable alternatives available so it’s important to ask your wedding florist what sustainable mechanics they intend to use in their work.” www.howieandtheflowers.co.uk www.instagram.com/howieandtheflowers www.facebook.com/howieandtheflowers 48
