All the latest from around both regions GREAT TASTE AWARDS REVEAL CORNWALL’S BEST FOOD AND DRINK IN 2024 The Guild of Fine Food has released the results for the Great Taste 2024. Winners from Cornwall include: Great Taste 3-star: Cornish Yarg from Lynher Dairies Cheese Company (www.lynherdairies.co.uk) Great Taste 2-star: Lindsay’s Cranberry, Apple & Orange Marzipan Festive Pie from Tanglewood Kitchen (www.tanglewoodkitchen.co.uk) Great Taste 1-star: Monterey Gin from Helford River Distillery (www.montereygin.co.uk). Each entry was meticulously blind-tasted by the Guild’s expert judging panel of more than 500 food critics, chefs, recipe creators, buyers, retailers, and other specialists in the field of food and drink. Those who have received 3 stars went on to be judged in a further stage of the competition. The best of those 3 stars from each country or region have been nominated for a Golden Fork, an ‘Oscar of the food and drink world’. The Great Taste Golden Fork winners will be announced in an awards ceremony and tasting at Battersea Arts Centre in London in September. John Farrand, managing director of the Guild of Fine Food comments: “It’s important to us at the Guild to inject some positivity into the speciality food and drink industry. Given the economic headwinds that both independent retailers and small and medium producers are facing, the announcement of the 2024 crop of Great Taste stars is now an annual fillip for us all. It’s not just excellence from the UK, but from across the world, as we celebrate the best from 115 countries. We’re doing our bit for cultural relations across the planet when there is so much legislation trying to prevent it. It’s a real privilege to support and underpin independent makers through the process of Great Taste.” The awards are globally recognised as a mark of excellence and are eagerly sought after by producers and food-lovers alike. www.gff.co.uk/directory NEWS THE FARM TABLE AT DARTS FARM RECEIVES AN OUTSTANDING RATING FROM TRENCHERMAN’S GUIDE Darts Farm has announced that its restaurant, The Farm Table has been awarded higher member status by The Trencherman’s Guide following their first visit. This fantastic accolade, which is only given to restaurants scoring more than 87%, follows hot on the heels of an AA Rosette, which was awarded at the end of last year. Michael Dart, who runs Darts Farm alongside his two brothers, James and Paul, comments, “We are thrilled with the review that The Farm Table has received from The Trencherman’s Guide. To be featured in the guide is one thing, but to receive a higher membership is incredible. It’s a huge landmark for our team, who have worked tirelessly to create a special local restaurant that champions quality ingredients alongside warm hospitality. The AA inspectors were the first of the professional critics to visit and award a rosette and now The Trencherman’s Guide has also recognised us for our hospitality and food.” The Trencherman’s Guide described dining at The Farm Table as “an unpretentious experience delivering first-rate ingredients crafted into well-executed delicious dishes.” They highlighted the “incredible ingredients” saying that “it felt like eating the landscape.” They awarded The Farm Table full points for provenance and a near-perfect score for their food and service. They described how it was a “hidden gem and deserves more promotion so that foodies know it exists.” Michael continues, “When we launched The Farm Table in 2022, we aimed to showcase the best produce available from our farm and food hall and this feedback illustrates that we are doing our fabulous ingredients justice. In its short history, The Farm Table has already been named Best Newcomer in the South West, by readers of Food Lifestyle, been shortlisted for Food and Travel’s Best Restaurant Outside of London, and been awarded an AA Rosette. Being featured in the forthcoming Trencherman’s Guide is another great string to our bow and we’re excited to keep pushing on.” Michael’s son, George, has been instrumental in bringing the original concept of The Farm Table to life and creating the new flagship restaurant. He explains, “Our aim with the launch of The Farm Table was to create a restaurant that would celebrate the simplicity of beautiful ingredients grown, reared, caught and crafted on our doorstep. Produce that cannot be sourced from the farm is provided by our vibrant community of like-minded artisan producers, farmers and fishermen who share our passion for flavour. We have had lots of amazing feedback from our customers, which we prize more than anything but awards from professional restaurant critics are always exciting to receive and reflect the team’s dedication and passion.” The Trencherman’s Guide showcases exquisite and authentic South West dining experiences so that foodies can discover special restaurants that are worth seeking out. Alongside scores from the Michelin and the AA, their experienced food journalists review, rate and assess businesses against a set of quality criteria. Successful applicants are eligible to be in the guide as Members, while those who achieve especially high marks (over 87%) in the scoring process are awarded Higher Membership. This membership is to be celebrated as the entry into a very exclusive club of the crème de la creme. The next edition of the guide will be released in September. The Farm Table is open seven days a week for lunch (from midday until 3 pm) and for dinner (from 6 until 9 pm) Wednesday to Saturday. The menu includes Darts Farm’s iconic Ruby red beef, dayboat fish and seasonal vegetables, all cooked over charcoal and accompanied by a wide selection of wines, beers, ciders and spirits from the cellar. www.dartsfarm.co.uk Nearlywed 9 LOCAL NEWS

LUXURY LODGES OFFER PET-FRIENDLY ACCOMMODATION With 34% of UK households now owning a pet dog, the demand for pet-friendly accommodation has unsurprisingly rocketed. Luxury Lodges are meeting this demand head-on with the addition of multiple new pet-friendly lodges across their sites, located in Britain’s most loved holiday destinations. Luxury Lodges’ North Cornwall site, Bude Coastal Resort, as well as its South Cornwall site, Clowance, are surrounded by nature and coastline, offering the perfect base for guests and their furry friends to explore the stunning surrounding scenery and beaches. The southwest region of the UK has been voted one of the most welcoming parts of the country for dogs, with 42% of travellers actively seeking destinations with good beaches that are dog-friendly, setting Bude Coastal Resort as the perfect option. According to Dog’s Trust, a significant 70% of dog owners now take their pets on holiday and highlighting this preference, a Condor Ferries survey showed that 85% of dog owners in the UK would choose a staycation with their dog over a holiday abroad without them. Discover the rugged coastline of Cornwall at Bude Coastal Resort, where modern design meets rustic charm. Take a walk along the South West Coast Path, which passes through Bude and offers stunning views of the coastline. The light displays will add something special for Halloween, Christmas and St.Pirans Week and will accompany various events and performances. The cottages worked with the café to put forward a plan for lighting up the trees surrounding The Heritage Cottage to the Experience Newquay panel. Last year saw additional lights added to the large Christmas tree and the public gave a huge positive response. The new up-lit trees and projections on to the cottages will be changed depending on the season and will provide a stunning walk-through experience for locals and visitors to the town. This will be something Newquay has never seen before and enhance the heritage location with state-of-the art lighting. Jill Willmott, chair of the board of trustees explains; “We were so delighted to have the chance to bring more to the Newquay community by utilising our fabulous park location. The cottages celebrate their tenth anniversary next year since our renovation and reopening and this is a fantastic way to bring a new wave of people down to see us. The light displays and events for each time of year will provide something special through winter and whether you are driving by or walking through we hope to bring something people can share and participate in. The funding will benefit our charity, the town and the whole of Trenance Valley and we would like to thank everyone involved in making this happen.” The first experience goes live for Halloween on the 27th of October. The big Christmas switch-on of the Christmas tree and full light displays with performances will be on Saturday the 23rd of November. The Christmas lights will be on every night through until Christmas with full details on all activities to be announced after the summer. Local Newquay electricians and lighting designers have been used to design and install the infrastructure over the summer period ready for Autumn. Experience Newquay who awarded the grant is a project promoting sustainable year-round tourism whilst connecting local Cornish communities and visitors with Newquay’s unique identity via cultural activities and programming. The project supports and promotes the local creative, leisure and heritage sectors. Specialising in crafting spirits with ingredients farmed and foraged on the North Cornwall coast, Padstow Distilling has gained a reputation for its small-batch spirits. Founder David McWilliams and his team use Cornish barley grown just one mile away from the distillery to create their base, with the process taking three weeks to ensure the highest quality of provenance for the distillery’s spirits. On the four award wins, David comments: “In the spirits world, few competitions are as incisive as the IWSC - and I’m very pleased with the results, not only because it confirms all our hard work has been worthwhile, but also because it shows the wider world how we can stand with the giants in the business. It’s the start of an exciting journey for us: each time we make a little improvement here or there in our recipes and methods, we can imagine our scores nudging ever so slightly higher, and that’s great motivation to do better each time. Thank you to all the judges at the IWSC for recognising our spirits!” Wins for Padstow Distilling include a Gold award for its vodka, Padstow Vodka Gun Point, a Silver award for its gin, Padstow Gin St George’s Well and Bronze awards for Padstow Rose Gin Hawker’s Cove and Navy Strength Gin Stepper Point. www.padstowdistilling.co.uk NEW CORNISH BEAUTY BRAND BELLE NATURAL UNVEILS NEW RANGE Founded just a few months ago in Cornwall, family-run business Belle Natural has hit the ground running by introducing a new range of seven innovative products for natural beauty and well-being – with more on the way. Belle Natural provides a trustworthy alternative for a more natural approach to personal care. Founder Freddie Latham says, “Belle Natural seeks to meet our client’s skin and hair care needs with natural solutions which are effective yet feel indulgent. All products are crafted with entirely plant-based ingredients and are free from harmful chemicals. The spa-inspired Rosemary & Mint Hair Strengthening Oil, which combines the potent benefits of rosemary and peppermint oils, is particularly effective in reducing hair loss and stimulating hair growth by increasing blood flow to the scalp and blocking DHT. CONGRATULATIONS! Wedding photographer Laura Farmer, the lady behind the lens at Freeformimages Photography based in North Devon has recently won the Prestige Awards Wedding Photographer of the Year award. Laura tells us, “I am over the moon for this recognition. All of my hard work to capture my couples’ memories and love for each other has just been a real honour. To be recognised in this way is just on another level.” Laura adds, “The award was based on my couples feedback and reviews, for my photography and high-quality customer service.” Over the past 16 years, Prestige has been running national and international awards under the Luxury Travel Guide and Corporate Live Wire platforms. In 2018, they introduced regional awards to recognise businesses that are extremely successful and hard-working on a local level. Judges consider whether the individual or business provides the best product and service in their particular sector or industry. This is primarily determined by the quality, efficiency and delivery of the product and service provided. Decisions are made based on service excellence, industry recognition, employee satisfaction, marketing and branding, ethical practice and of course customer feedback. All recognised companies are listed in their awards book, and receive the winner’s logos and trophy. Laura also owns and runs The Little Red Bus, a chauffeur-driven VW hire and photo booth called Rory, www.freeformimages.co.uk/ thelittleredbus. Couples can book Rory, decorated in colours of their choice to transport them or their wedding guests to their venue with complimentary champagne, non-alcoholic fizz, cider or beer.
