With ornate plasterwork, portraits adorning the walls and secret bookcase doors, each room writes its own narrative. The architecture is a fusion of various styles reflecting the periods spanning more than 600 years. The castle boasts two enchanting open-air ceremony garden buildings, surrounded by woodland, providing a beautiful contrast to the grandeur of the state rooms within the castle. The Victorian Rose Garden enjoys farflung views across Deer Park to the estuary beyond. The terrace is ideal for a sunny ceremony for up to 100 guests, or a champagne reception. Alternatively, The American Garden is a wooded glade of exotic trees brought over from early voyages to the USA that surround the hidden garden pavilion. It’s an idyllic setting for a ceremony or drinks reception for up to 120 guests and it’s also wonderful for festival-style receptions. Inside the castle, The State Dining Room was an extension created in the Victorian era with oak panelling. It’s licensed for ceremonies of up to 80 guests and provides an exquisite and warm space, thanks to the most impressive open fire. It can also host a wedding breakfast for up to 60 people, and a band, DJ or musician in the minstrels gallery above. With large windows overlooking the Deer Park and Terrace Rose Garden, the First and Second Libraries are ideal reception choices. Surrounded by an extensive book collection, vows can be exchanged in front of 70 guests, and up to 90 loved ones can gather for dinner. The Music Room, also known as the secret ballroom because of the secret doorway from the library, is the largest function room and can host up to 120 guests for a ceremony or wedding breakfast. It’s home to the refurbished organ and grand piano, and the spectacular dome sets the scene for the first dance. An iconic landmark standing above the Exe is the 18th-century Powderham Belvedere, originally a ballroom and banqueting house. The tower is available for ceremonies for an intimate 30 guests and the Belvedere garden can house a modest marquee for a reception of up to 90 loved ones. The Barn at Powderham Castle has had many purposes, from a tennis court to most recently a riding school. It’s now a show-stopping space available for up to 200 guests for a ceremony and reception. The rustic charm of this space makes it perfect for couples looking for a relaxed, barn wedding. The adjacent garden provides outdoor seating and lawn games and is just a few steps away from a peaceful spot beside the lake. Ceremony licence?
