YOUR “WE DOS,” YOUR WAY Richard Lavender is an independent celebrant based in Chester. He loves nothing more than creating and delivering personalised and memorable ceremonies that are as wonderfully unique as the couples they’re about. “My journey as a celebrant began after a long career in the corporate world,” Richard shares. “Having run my own business and done a lot of public and in-house speaking over a number of years, I decided I wanted to do something different.” With past involvement in an event business Richard had been to lots of weddings and had seen celebrants performing ceremonies, some good, some not so good. “So, I did my research and was staggered by how strict the rules and regulations were that we had to adhere to just to have an official ceremony,” he continues. “I thought there had to be a better way that gives you the freedom to do what you want, not what you’re told to do. It’s the day of your life you should have the freedom to choose.” So, Richard Lavender Celebrant was born! Richard will ensure your big day is however you want it to be. He likes to make the ceremonies he conducts fun, uplifting, special and involved, and takes great joy in creating moments that will remain an important part of your lives. We’ve partnered with Richard this issue to offer readers Lavender Celebrants’ ceremony and full-day hosting packages for the price of the ceremony-only package. To claim, simply get in touch with Richard via https:// lavendercelebrants.co.uk and quote ‘Your Cheshire & Merseyside Wedding’. Offer ends 31st December 2024. A mere stone’s throw from the vibrant village of Knutsford, Cheshire, Cottons Hotel & Spa was born out of a 1950s jazz roadhouse. A true hidden gem, it offers a quiet haven away from the hustle and bustle, while being close to the myriad of attractions the area is famous for. It also offers a variety of wonderful wedding spaces, providing a dream backdrop for a celebration to remember. Your Cheshire & Merseyside Wedding editor Kelly Andrews spent two nights ensconced here to find out more about what the venue has to offer its couples. A WARM WELCOME Although I arrived late summer, with the Hotel’s warming dark wood and bare brick interiors, and welcoming riot of floral colours, I can imagine it being just as fine on a chilly winter’s day. As I flung open the door to my room, my eye was immediately attracted to the enticing corner sofa and cosy hot pink cushions. So, after a long drive I flopped down and grabbed the remote control – it was after all, the last days of the Olympics! LOCAL FOODIE FARE I tore myself away from my corner sofa just in time for a 7.30pm dinner in the restaurant. Home-cooked AA Rosette food, made from scratch by the Hotel’s chefs is served here. Local, fresh and full of flavour, they use only top quality seasonal produce from the best suppliers in Cheshire. The menu boasts plenty of hearty, humble fare from day boat caught fish of the day to Cottons pie of the day. I opted for the beer battered fish and chips with crushed peas, lemon and tartare sauce, which was a real treat. I followed this up with the crème brulee with shortbread biscuits, seasonal fruit and sorbet. Grab a booth if you can for a romantic and intimate dining experience. As comfy as the beds are here, meaning getting up early will be a chore, it’ll all be worth tearing yourself away when you make it down for breakfast! While an impressive array of delicious continental breakfast delicacies await for you to help yourself to, there’s also an enticing menu of hot food available to order. Choose from speciality dishes including vanilla French toast, American stack pancakes, smashed avocado on toast and so much more. Normally one for a full on cooked breakfast, I was admittedly still feeling defeated by dinner the night before and decided to play it (comparatively) light with the Eggs Royale. This dish of poached egg, smoked salmon, and fresh hollandaise sauce atop English muffins is my new favourite way to start the day! AND...RELAX I decided the spa wasn’t to be missed. So, with book in hand I headed on over at my earliest convenience. The sun-drenched conservatory with its loungers called to me and there I whiled away a couple of relaxing hours pausing to take a dip in the pool and Jacuzzi. I soon decided it would be a waste of the last drops of summer not to head outside for a bit where I’d noticed further loungers and some folk taking advantage. There I found the hot tub. Relieved I hadn’t missed this experience I soaked there for a while before I absolutely had to go back to the room to get ready for dinner! The Hotel offers a wide range of spa break packages, so if you’re after some pre-wedding pampering, do pay a visit to www.cottonshotel.co.uk/ spa-treatments/spa-days-breaks WHERE TO WED When it comes to the “I dos” you can choose from three gorgeous suites here at Cottons. The Tabley Suite can accommodate up to 80 nearest and dearest. You’ll love exchanging your vows in this open and beautiful room. Also, available for your celebrations, this bright, airy conservatory is ideal for gatherings of 80 and boasts its own private bar and outdoor terrace. UPON A STAR When you wish When Kelly met Erika all of her dreams came true at once Images courtesy of Jaine Briscoe-Price Photography 24
Being alone during the pandemic had a profound affect on Kelly. It allowed her to slow down and reflect on what she cherished in life. She realised that she hadn’t been prioritising what she really wanted: her own family. So, on her birthday she made a wish and a decision to meet her soulmate. That night she created her profile on a dating website. The next morning she woke up to an amazing message from Erika. “I knew I had to respond, and it was the best thing I ever did,” she says. By the time it was safe for the couple to meet, Kelly already knew Erika was the one. “Meeting her was like coming home,” she explains, “I’ve never been more certain of anything in my life.” Wishes really do come true. When the time came, Erika planned the most romantic of proposals. She took Kelly for a Champagne picnic on Thurstaston Beach and on the walk back they turned a corner into a clearing where Kelly was speechless to find the most beautiful white horse, her mane beautifully plaited with roses. Kelly has been mystified by white horses ever since childhood, so to her this was a magical sight indeed. Erika guided her over to a nearby bench taking a pouch from the mare who drew closer. She removed an engagement ring from it and got down on one knee. “My heart stopped,” Kelly remembers. “I was in shock but so happy.” In fact, it took her a moment to realise that their eventual wedding photographer Jaine had popped out of a nearby bush to take photos. She’d helped Erika to plan the most amazing proposal for Kelly. There was even more exciting news to come though! In 2009, Erika set up Pride Angel, a parenting connection website for anyone wishing to be a sperm donor, egg donor, or co-parent. As a microbiologist with the aspiration to have her own child as a lesbian woman, she wanted to find a known donor rather than someone anonymous. She also wanted to support other people in the same circumstances, helping them to achieve their dream of becoming parents. Soon after Erika met Kelly, she became pregnant with her second child from the same known donor found through her website. Becoming a mum was Kelly’s dream, but she never imagined it would happen so soon for her, first to Eva Rose, Erika’s first daughter, and then nine months later, to Aria. Kelly embraced her role without hesitation. Today, three years after the birth of Aria, Kelly is herself expecting the couple’s third child with the same known donor with whom they keep in contact. But we’ve jumped ahead, so back to the big day! Originally, the couple had planned to tie the knot in 2025, but being pregnant spurred them on to get married sooner. So, they wasted no time and organised their big day in just over six weeks! Read on as we find out more from Kelly and Erika... I DO, I DO, I DO Not only did photographer Jaine Briscoe-Price capture the couple’s magical engagement, she was also their wedding photographer and celebrant. “Jaine provided the most fabulous ceremony,” Erika tells us. “The words she put together after listening to both Kelly’s and my story made it an incredibly personal moment covering lots of precious memories of our life together so far,” Erika remembers. This also included a sand ceremony in which their daughters took part as well as the baby on the way. “She truly made our day every bit as memorable as it could have been with this beautiful touch,” Erika says.
