Q&A Beauty Look and feel your big-day best with help from the professionals STEP INTO THE LIGHT The dark circles under my eyes always bother me and I never have managed to hide them to my satisfaction. My wedding day is the time to solve this! What can you recommend? Make-up artist Hannah Carson (www.hannahcarsonmua.com) says: I have a really quick and easy fix for you! The first step is ensuring you’re prepping by hydrating your under eyes. Hydration is so important. This helps your products to melt into the skin flawlessly. If you have drier skin under-eye products won’t blend or smooth out as easily, so remember: hydration is key. Once prepped, all you need is a dash of warm colour correction. It might sound complicated, but in three easy steps you can achieve it. If you apply concealer directly to dark circles it looks cloudy and grey. But adding a little of a peach or orange cream corrector, targeting the darker areas, counteracts the blue tones helping to conceal. Step 1: Simply using your finger will warm up the product helping it to blend. Use light patting motions until all the dark areas are covered and leave for 30 to 40 seconds. Step 2: Apply your regular concealer on top using a sponge or brush to get a good coverage using patting motions again to achieve a good coverage. Step 3: Set. A translucent setting powder will help to lock the other products in. So, only three products are needed and you won’t need to break the bank. Try Makeup Revolution Eye Bright Under Eye Corrector, which comes in two shades: light-medium and medium-deep. I also recommend Superdrug Vitamin E Eye Cream and Collection Hydrating Full Coverage Concealer. FIFTY AND THRIVING What make-up tips can you offer for my more mature skin? I’m a bride in my 50s and would love to have that fresh glowing look! Make-up artist Laura Kilfoyle (www.laurakilfoylebridal.co.uk) says: It all starts with skin prep. Making sure the skin is ready for make-up with a really hydrating moisturiser should be everyone’s first step. Before moisturiser, you may also want to add a gentle liquid exfoliation, which helps to remove dead skin and oil. Next, consider using cream products as powders can look heavy and can settle into fine lines. Cream products are also easy to build up in coverage and to blend. You can use your fingers, a brush or a beauty blender to apply. Brown mascara and brown liner are much more flattering and can look less harsh than black on mature skin. Consider tightlining the top water line with a brown pencil liner, which helps to subtly define the eyes. You may wish to colour correct areas of discolouration. For redness, start with a very light layer of green colour corrector. For dark circles, apply a peach toned colour corrector, again with a light layer. When it comes to concealer, less is more. Apply a lightweight, hydrating concealer in light layers and build as needed. You may wish to apply foundation, which should be a light to medium coverage. Again, begin with light layers and build as needed. A creamy lipstick will be better suited to mature skin, as with powder products, matte lipsticks can accentuate fine lines. My top tip overall is less is more. It’s easier to add than it is to take away. Building up in layers will also aid the longevity of your make-up. Alvin Mahmudov on Unsplash 80
