CAKES 53 Tiers of joy Your dose of big-day bake know-how from the region’s professionals WHAT’S HOT? What are the modern decoration techniques that couples are asking for at the moment? Anita Cain from Anita’s Wicked Cakes in Liverpool (www.anitaswickedcakes.co.uk) says: “Couples are usually asking for all buttercream or semi-naked cakes with a rustic theme, as well as floral designs using fresh or dried flowers, edible gold leaf, and some stencilling effects. Mostly, cake designs are tall with colour palettes to match the venue styling.” Nicola Thomas from Chester-based Boutique Bakery (www.boutiquebakery.co.uk) says: “Floating tiers are incredibly popular with couples this year and with good reason, they give your bake the wow factor and are less expensive than having another one made from cake. They’re a really great option if you have fewer guests to feed but really want to maximise the impact. Wafer and rice papers also continue to be popular and bring a fabulous modern twist, even more so when combined with spacers or clear acrylic tiers.” Meg Olechowska from Cake Creations Southport (www.cakecreation.co.uk) says: “Recently metallic details are quite popular. These can add a touch of glamour and sophistication to a cake, whether it’s gold, silver, copper or rose gold. Some of the ways to incorporate this element are by brushing on edible metallic paint, adding gold leaf, or using customised cake toppers. Your cake is then ready for any theme from rustic to romantic.” We presented some of the region’s wedding cake makers with the top big-day bake related questions currently on the tip of our tongues here at Your Cheshire & Merseyside Wedding HQ.
