Well, hasn’t 2022 just flown by? I can hardly believe it, here we are, fast approaching Christmas. It’s only natural as you reach the end of a year to reflect on all that’s happened as well as what’s to come. For me, the highlight has been CWM senior editor Melissa’s nuptials. Celebrating that amazing wedding day really brought home to me how far we’ve come this year from the dark days of 2020 and 2021 with its lockdowns and restrictions. It felt like the normality we’d been praying for, when many of us had been left plagued with doubt over whether our wonderful world of weddings would ever be back in quite the same way. There’s even been the usual flurry of celebrity weddings this year, leading the way as ever with trends we expect to see featuring in your weddings very soon, notably on the veil front. There was Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck with the bride dressed in that oh-so elegant Ralph Lauren turtle-neck column ceremony dress and a sleek silhouette with removable veil hood for the evening. Personally, I’m hoping we see more bridal hoods on wedding dresses next year, following on from the amazing capes that made inroads in 2022. Meanwhile, Kourtney Kardashian made pairing a short dress with a long veil a thing when she married Travis Barker. The showstopping cathedral-length veil was personalised with handembroidered flowers and a large image of the Virgin Mary inspired by her new husband’s tattoo. In September, when we sadly lost Her Majesty the Queen and TV channels were airing wall-to-wall documentaries looking back over her incredible life and service, we were reminded of her wedding day in 1947, when she was still Princess Elizabeth. Seeing these images brought me back full circle. Sure, J-Lo’s veil was new and edgy, Kourtney K’s was modern and oh-so personal, but looking at these 70-something-year-old images of our beloved Queen made me realise: Her Majesty did it best! Her breathtaking 13-foot tulle veil attached at the shoulders was symbolic of rebirth and growth after the Second World War and was said to be inspired by Botticelli’s painting of Primavera. So, enough musings from me! I hope you enjoy this issue where the region’s cake makers aim to inspire with a display of their most showstopping bakes. Plus, head over to our flower feature to find out everything you wanted to know about wedding florals but were afraid to ask. Enjoy and keeeep planning! Cave Bristol on Gloucester Road opened two weeks before the first lockdown in 2020, but plans quickly had to pivot. Martin kept the store open, operating under government guidelines, but acted quickly to take the concept online. The online store launched soon after with great success offering a selection of properly sourced wines, local cheese and provisions unlike any available elsewhere in the city. Orders were, and still are, delivered by bike in Bristol using zero-carbon. Martin says, “Choosing wine for your wedding can be a daunting task and it’s commonplace for venues to only allow couples to choose from their wine list, resulting in a lack of choice and poorer quality wine with a large markup. At Cave we’ve had many customers come to us with this problem but there are ways to circumnavigate this issue. One is to offer to pay a corkage fee, then visiting a local merchant or wine expert to select and purchase wines to better suit the occasion, your style and most importantly complement the food. “The best scenario, of course, is not being tied to the venue’s wine list and this is where the fun begins. We’ve worked with a host of nearlyweds, helping them to select their wedding wine and it’s something we take great pride and passion in. People are generally much more conscious about serving high-quality food and drink at their weddings these days and a good merchant should always be able to help with pairing the menu perfectly, tailoring wines to suit their couples’ palates and finding great value to suit the budget. From whites, reds, oranges and fizz, classical or unconventional there are endless regions and styles to explore.” Discover more at www.cavebristol.co.uk https://srwphoto.co.uk PLAY THAT SAX! Local vocalist and saxophonist Lucy Harvey has won the Wedding Entertainment category for solo, duo or string quartet musicians at the 2022 South West Wedding Awards held in November. The annual awards recognise wedding suppliers throughout the South West who exceed the expectations of their customers by providing outstanding service, crowning these very special wedding suppliers as the best of the best in the region. Wedding companies covering all aspects of the industry can enter the various categories available, including photographers, stationery, bridal hair and more. Votes can only be placed by couples who’ve used the suppliers for their own nuptials, making the winners very much the people’s choice. Lucy says, “I’m over the moon to have my music and dedication to the industry recognised by the couples I’ve entertained over the 2022 wedding season.” Find out more at www.lucyharvey.co.uk LOCAL NEWS 9

navy Elizabeth and Jack styled their big day in a gorgeous palette of blues ranging from dark to light Images courtesy of Tina Vedrine of The Vedrines Photography IN THE 28
Elizabeth met Jack while working at Cineworld. She’d just finished her degree in the U.S. and he was in his last year at university. Although the pair had mutual friends, they’d never met until this point. Elizabeth tells us, “A co-worker told me that she thought I’d really like Jack, and she wasn’t wrong! I’d definitely say it was an instant attraction on my part, but it did take him a few months to ask me out on our first date.” Jack proposed to Elizabeth on her birthday at The Ivy in Bath. “When we arrived at our table a member of staff asked if we’d like to see the outside terrace, and as we headed out I knew Jack was about to propose. He started: ‘There’s a reason I’ve brought you up here today...’ After that I had tunnel vision until the moment I could accept,” Elizabeth shares. This was actually the back-up plan as Jack had hoped to pop the question on the bridge in Prior Park earlier that morning, but it had closed due to windy weather. But, Elizabeth says, “It didn’t matter where he asked me the question, the answer would always be, ‘Yes’.” Elizabeth’s sister tied the knot at Clearwell Castle, partner venue to St Audries Park, so she’d known about it for a while. Once she became engaged to Jack, this was top of her list to go and see. “I cried the whole way around,” she tells us. Jack had to work that morning and met her at the second venue appointment of the day. By the time he reached her, St Audries Park was all she could talk about, so they returned later in the week to allow him to see it, and it was done. “We were actually very lucky as we booked our date, 21st May 2022, only a few days before the country went into lockdown,” Elizabeth remembers. Read on as the bride tells us more about the big day... SETTING THE SCENE The couple decided on blue for their palette and with navy as the main base lighter hues were added as accents. This was beautifully achieved with the favours and place names, which were little acrylic cards in three different shades of blue rotated around the tables. Also made from acrylic were the frosted welcome sign, unplugged sign, order of the day and table numbers all with white vinyl lettering, which the bride made herself with her Cricut. When it came to the flowers, Elizabeth had something super-simple in mind for her bouquet. “I went with mainly white flowers, specifically garden roses, which the boys also wore as buttonholes, with a little bit of light blue coming through via the thistles,” she explains. Elizabeth had collected lots of different crystal vases for the centrepieces and their wedding florist filled them with gypsophila, light blue delphiniums and lunaria. The smaller vases were used to hold tea lights – autumn pearl by Yankee Candle. Larger candles adorned the top table, which helped to fill the reception space with fragrance. The big-day bake boasted three tiers and was decorated in icing to look like waves with a blend of different blues. The cake maker also made some lunaria for it to match the floral arrangements. LOOKING THE PART Elizabeth looked stunning in Jess by Eva Lendel. “As soon as I saw it, I knew it was the one,” she says. “I knew I wanted something clean, simple and elegant, but didn’t imagine it would be as incredible. It was the first one I tried on.” The bride paired the gown with a cathedral-length veil and in the evening wore a crown adorned in pearls, moons and stars. She was also able to remove her overskirt for a trip down to the beach. The pièce the résistence was a pair of glorious sparkly Jimmy Choos. Jack wore a dark navy suit by Mark Darcy along with a cream waistcoat and navy paisley tie. The groomsmen were dressed in the same suits, but wore theirs with the matching waistcoats and light blue paisley 29 REAL WEDDINGS
