Summer has officially arrived in full bloom, which has got me ruminating on my favourite topic – wedding flowers. I must confess, I adore fresh flowers, none more so than our British spring and summer varieties, so I do hope you’ll indulge me for a short while as I wax lyrical! The perfect wedding blooms effortlessly fill an empty venue with romance, fragrance and colour, creating the ultimate ambience; and with the right florist on your side, they can speak volumes about the two of you and the vision for your big day. What’s more, they’re efficient. Pedestals, aisle meadow arrangements, ceremony arches and much more can all be moved into your reception space after the “I dos” and seamlessly transform into centrepieces and top table backdrop. You get the most from your budget, your theme carries through and you keep waste to a minimum. Your wedding day is all about the two of you, so why not have a think about how you can tailor your flowers to further tell your love story? The language of flowers combines tradition with sentimentality and conveys a meaning that perhaps only the two of you will understand, but as you’re the two most important that’s all that matters. For example, gypsophila is a wedding staple but perhaps its meaning, everlasting love, has been lost over the years. Some of my other favourites include: cornflowers symbolising prosperity and friendship; hydrangeas meaning gratitude and understanding; peonies speaking of romance, prosperity, good luck and a happy life; and roses, in particular pink, which symbolise admiration. So, you see, you can write an entire love letter to your new spouse through your bouquet – how romantic. I do hope some of this has whet your appetite for more wedspiration; if so, don’t miss our venue styling feature where florals never fail to impress. We’ve also been in touch with the region’s bridal boutiques to take a look into how to dress according to your vibe. Plus, this issue’s Hot Topic experts are discussing intimate weddings. So, as ever, enjoy and keeeep planning! We’re here for it! 45 FOCAL FLOWERS Flower filled urns, like this stunner by Ambience Venue Styling, are a great way to make efficient use of your blooming budget. Place them along the aisle or either side of the altar, then when the “I dos” have been exchanged, have them moved through to the reception space offering a warm welcome or top table embellishment. Nestled in the heart of Bath and situated in the centre of its iconic Georgian crescent, The Royal Crescent Hotel & Spa is a five-star haven of elegance, excellence and tranquillity. Steeped in a history that spans more than 250 years, having first been occupied in 1775, the Hotel boasts bedrooms and function spaces uniquely designed with spectacular views. Your Bristol & Somerset Wedding editor Kelly Andrews spent a weekend there to find out more. A WARM WELCOME Bath is one of my favourite places on earth, so to have the chance to stay in one if its most memorable and historical locations was a dream come true, and didn’t disappoint. I felt simultaneously naughty and smug as I drove into the Royal Crescent itself as a tour group looked on from its vantage point outside No.1. We were immediately and cheerfully welcomed by the concierge who took our luggage inside from the driving rain and situated us in the stylish, cosy lounge in front of a roaring fire while we waited to be checked in. The Hotel’s incredibly chic and seamless blend of oh-so tasteful modern décor and romantic historical features struck me as soon as I set foot through the doors and was a characteristic I fell in love with more and more throughout my stay. A WORLD OF OUR OWN We were shown to our stunning suite in the Wedding Villa through the beautiful landscaped gardens next to the converted coach houses, where Montagu’s Mews and the Spa are to be found. Hidden behind a gated wall, the Wedding Villa is a home-away-from-home for wedding couples here at The Royal Crescent Hotel, and can accommodate up to eight for the night. To the front of its impressive porticoed entrance lies the delightful secluded Wedding Garden, which our suite looked out over, a real treat. When booked exclusively, this entire section becomes yours for the day, your own private slice of Jane Austen or Bridgerton. The space can host 90 ceremony guests, 30 for a seated wedding breakfast and 80 standing. ULTIMATE RELAXATION Without any further ado, it was time for me to hit the spa! The Spa & Bath House offers a whole host of treatments to enjoy as well as a wealth of LOVE STORY A Georgian Your Bristol & Somerset Wedding editor Kelly Andrews visited The Royal Crescent Hotel & Spa to discover the delights it has to offer your wedding day 16

What made it special for me was the ambience, which given it’s location in the heart of Bath very much offers that traditional rejuvenative atmosphere one might imagine of the Roman Baths. No doubt, this is largely thanks to the historical architecture on display in the shape of arched Georgian windows and bare stonework. FOODIE PARADISE With the rain kindly stopping long enough for us to enjoy a short evening stroll through the glorious gardens to Montagu’s Mews, the evening’s meal was highly anticipated – I’d heard great things about chef Martin Blake. Montagu’s Mews, is renowned for serving stunning dishes curated with excellence and passion by award-winning Martin and his team. The 3AA Rosette farm-to-fork menu is all lovingly created with fresh, locallysourced ingredients. Believe me, I’m no Jay Rayner, but if a Michelin Star doesn’t follow soon, I’ll be much surprised! The food here is to die for, so if a fine-dining style wedding breakfast is top of your must-have list, you need look no further. Our meal began with black treacle soda bread, and was on an upward trajectory from there. My 30-day dry aged Herefordshire beef tartar starter, was served with Bath ale hollandaise and IP8 vinegar – the flavours were unbelievable. This was followed by roasted garlic gnocchi, served with artichoke, nasturtium and Roscoff onion velouté, and was the most pretty plate of food I’ve ever seen. Finally, the chocolate tainori with toasted barley and praline was beautifully indulgent without being outrageously heavy; the perfect end to the perfect meal. For your big day Montagu’s Mews Bar & Restaurant can host 100 guests standing, 60 seated at round tables, and 70 ceremony guests. “I DO” Having experienced the wedding spaces here first hand, I won’t hesitate in telling you they’re every bit as special as you’d imagine from such an iconic location. The Sir Percy Blakeney Suite, located on the first floor of the Mansion House is actually one of the Hotel’s master suites and is licensed for beautifully intimate weddings with 40 standing, 33 seated at round tables, 22 at one table or 33 for the ceremony. The Library too offers a wonderful spot for intimate “I dos” with room for 30 standing, 20 for the vows and 12 seated at one table. It boasts romantic views of the picturesque acre of gardens. Located on the lower ground floor of the Mansion House, The Sheridan can accommodate 40 standing, 33 seated at round tables, 22 on one table and 33 for the ceremony. Its private courtyard found just outside is the perfect setting for a post-meal drink offering the unique perspective of the Crescent. In fact, if the correct applications are made, permissions gained and fees paid, it’s possible to enjoy an unforgettable drinks reception on the Royal Crescent lawn. For larger affairs that require exclusive-use of the Hotel, a marquee pitched in the gardens could be for you. The space could hold up to 110 loved ones seated. One thing’s for certain, with 45 impeccably designed and decorated bedrooms and suites on site, you and your guests won’t be short of a comfortable, classy place to rest your heads after a long day of celebrations. Bee mine Fiona and Adam’s bee-themed big day as an emotional and oh-so romantic affair Images courtesy of Jon Warr Photography 22

Fiona and Adam met during university fresher’s week. “I was attracted by his amazing dance moves – who am I kidding?” Fiona jokes. The two spent a lot of time together in halls and in between lectures, and soon fell in love. In March 2022, the couple took a city break to Lisbon to celebrate Adam’s birthday. He chose the big day to propose as it was the only one they’d had without rain! He romantically popped the question on Praia de Carcavelos beach, just outside the city and the two celebrated in the evening with plenty of wine and tapas. “It was a total surprise to me, but it now made sense why Adam created a competitive race through bag check in at the airport and never let me carry his backpack during the trip!” The couple were living in Bromley at the time, but Fiona wanted to get married closer to her childhood home. They had their hearts set on a rustic venue with ample outdoor space, and when they discovered Priston Mill it fit the bill. “It’s very picturesque and we were sold when we saw the beautiful Tythe Barn and surrounding grounds, especially in late spring bloom,” Fiona explains. So, they wasted no time in securing their date: 27th August 2023. Join us as the bride tells us all about their special day. SETTING THE SCENE The couple opted for gold lanterns to be scattered around the top of the aisle and along its length for the ceremony, as well as choosing a beautiful gold wreath which their florist decorated with flowers and a white drape. “The venue was so gorgeous we felt less was more,” Fiona explains. Their florist had been briefed on their palette and bee theme, and ran with an array of white, yellow and green flowers and herbs. On arrival in the Parlour, guests were welcomed by a sign handmade by the bride, adorned with a green drape to tie in with the palette. The Parlour also had a table, which the couple used for their card box and Fiona designed a ‘Meant to bee’ cork board displaying photos of their parents’ and grandparents’ weddings. Favours were wildflower seed packets, as the couple’s contribution to saving the bees, along with yellow bon bons in little black bags. The theme continued through the table names; each being named after a different type of bee with the top table called ‘the hive.’ The table plan featured hexagons to mimic honeycomb. The reception tables were simply decorated with a gold candle, a gold picture frame containing a named bee, as well as a trio of flower vases. Fiona and mother-of-the-bride Sarah spent a weekend in early August drying out gypsophila and handmaking the place cards, bearing a gold bee wax seal. Outside the venue Fiona and Adam also decorated an old wooden gate with their initials and a floral arrangement. It complemented the rustic vibe of the venue and was taken from Fiona’s childhood home with many memories of its own. The cakes were lovingly made by Maxine, mother-of-the-groom. They were fruit cake and a sponge topped with Colin and Connie Caterpillars in wedding attire. The catering was expertly taken care of by the venue team. The couple opted for a three-course meal followed by tacos in the evening. “Everything was delicious and received plenty of compliments from our guests,” Fiona remembers. LOOKING THE PART The bride looked stunning in Galatea by Rosa Clara. “I loved the halter neck and lace detail with its simple skirt,” she tells us. She accessorised with a cathedral length veil with a lace trim for added drama, finishing the look with a pair of simple ivory block heels. Her beautiful jewellery included a small pair of pearl earrings from Bloom Boutique and her late great grandmother’s ring as her something REAL WEDDINGS 23

borrowed and blue. Adam wore a navy suit with check detail from Reda 1865 and accessorised it with a green tie, pocket square and waistcoat from Hisdern. His groomsmen meanwhile were all dressed to match him. The beautiful bridesmaids were dressed in green, full-length dresses with flutter sleeves and ruffle detail at the front. They accessorised with initial necklaces gifted by Fiona on the morning of the wedding. CELEBRATE IN STYLE The superb Mairi Therese performed during the ceremony and drinks reception. A singer and guitarist, she has a chilled, silky voice bringing just the right ambience to the day. “She received some great compliments from guests and mesmerised a few of the younger ones!” Fiona remembers. “She also went out of her way to learn a song very special to us for me to walk down the aisle to.” In the evening local band Fake Plastic Chairs brought the fun, keeping everyone entertained and boogying on the dancefloor, where Fiona was able to enjoy the dance moves from Adam she loves so much! MEMORABLE MOMENTS “I just felt excited to marry Adam and celebrate this wonderful day with our nearest and dearest,” Fiona shares. “I was tearful just before I walked down the aisle on hearing our special song but was reassured by my father Brian.” Adam remembers, “I was extremely nervous at first and my groomsmen commented on my newfound pacing and inability to stand still! Seeing Fiona at the top of the aisle led to a flurry of relief that she’d shown up though and an unrivalled happiness washed over me imagining the future we’d build. The quivering of my bottom lip didn’t go unnoticed by our guests, but the attempt to keep it under control did make for some great jawline photos!” THE GREAT GETAWAY The newlyweds’ dream honeymoon didn’t get off to the best start. They arrived at Heathrow at 5.30am as planned, tickets to Lima Peru via Madrid in hand. Sadly, UK air traffic control had other ideas and cancelled their flight to Madrid. “It appeared our dreams of a romantic honeymoon had been scuppered at the first hurdle,” Fiona says. Having been cornered by an opportunistic reporter they soon became flooded with messages from home about their unwitting appearance on Good Morning Britain, Lorraine and ITV News! None the more for that, Trailfinders and British Airways support teams were both on the case and managed to solve our couple’s problem in under an hour, and as they quickly applied for emergency visas, they were finally on their way to Lima via Miami. “The next three weeks were some of the best of our lives,” says Fiona. “We travelled to multiple locations in Peru starting in Puerto Maldonado staying in the five-star Amazon jungle resort of Inkaterra Hacienda Conception, where we were taken on river and forest excursions.” Other stops included Cusco, hiking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, taking a luxury train ride to Lake Titicaca, and a stay in a Pacific coast spa resort in Mancora where they were able to watch a pod of whales from their infinity pool vantage point. Truly the honeymoon, indeed holiday, of a lifetime. 25 REAL WEDDINGS
